Sentiment Analysis by Havanaparasocialclub

Kind listener Havanaparasocialclub did a back-of-the-envelop sentiment analysis on some Decoding content. Some of you will have seen them in the chat channel but we felt they deserved a broader audience. And before you offer hot takes on conversation dominance remember Chris needs to introduce and contextualise all the clips!

This is fascinating. Thank you so much for doing this.

Don Schaffner

The fascinating thing for me is the consistency across different gurus. It seems to say more about Matt and Chris’s character than it does about their view of each guru. I wouldn’t have predicted that.

Sam Morris

I’d like an analysis like this on Sam Harris.

Linda Sears

Contemptuous pricks 😜

michael r

Don't let Sean Carroll see how much contempt Chris has for him!

Trees

Thanks for explaining that. I was curious as to why.

Linda Sears

Okay, 15% is pretty low for Chris. It's mostly when he goes off on a tangent about someone he really hates

Jack

I'll see if I can find a segment

Jack

Segment speakers, analyse by no more than 10 second chunks, ignore chunks less than 0.5 seconds, pick the most likely emotion, I don't sum all detected, it's too noisy.

Jack

There are whole sections of Matt and Chris being surprised and jokingly annoyed at each other. At times they communicate in what are approaching grunts.

Jack

Python, pyannote/speaker-diarization, ser-odyssey-baseline-wavlm-categorical-attribute and faster whisper. Visualisations done in power bi.

Jack

Nice! What did you use to do this @havanaparasocialclub?

Neil vdp

Interesting work! Ignoring affect in the moment, emotional response is about the gap between prediction or expectation and experienced reality. I really liked Feldman-Barrett’s work on this. I guess the valence and intensity of these emotional responses depends on quite a matrix of factors! Did you find that there were times when the emotional response was either really strong or even indeterminate - e.g. a guru causing disbelief at one end or confusion at the other?

CrystalJade

It’s very interesting. Quantitative research showed that Chris is more happy person than Matt and my world is shattered

aneladgam_varelse

How did you assign emotions?

aneladgam_varelse

This is great. I don’t remember Brené Brown prompting such contempt in Chris… maybe he needs to rest in the tender vulnerability of courageous self acceptance more until he gets her.

Rebecca C

You'll notice Chris is showing a lot of contempt in the Sean Carroll episode but they both like Sean. It's because they're comparining him to known idiots.

Jack

Laughing at their expense, it's like shooting fish in a barrel in this instance

Jack

Wait, Red Scare makes Matt happy?

Ema Corro

Said, the model kept assigning Matt to the intro music by a non insignficant margin *shrug*

Jack

I did this because I was stuck on something else. However, I'm going to do something with the idea beyond a little curiosity\banter when I get back from a trip.

Jack

Some notes here: * You should not read this as a summary of Chris and Matts underlying real world personalities. In /my/ real life I do my best to play devils advocate and steel man people, that /does not/ mean that if I were having a conversation about Elon Musk I would not show the same level of contempt as Chris and Matt. * This is a podcast and I would guess to some extend they're playing characters. * There are cultural differences with respect to how someone from Northern Island and Australia express themselves. This would be much more comparable if they were both from the same country. * I made a joke about Chris dominating the conversation, this isn't actually true. He has to introduce the topics and keep it on track, otherwise it would just be two friends catching up or they would have to pay Editor Andy a thousand dollars an episode to make it listenable.

Jack

I thought I liked hearing Matt's voice more. Now I realize it was just the scarcity heuristic.

Well done, Havanaparasocialclub!
