We need to pry it out of him!

Hello from Pittsburgh! I wonder if PA is part of Matt's Great Burger Caper?

Kerena

Matt (pretending to be Eric): “don’t forget … I could END you” *maniacal laughter* 😂 great episode guys.

Jannik

Great episode. Disappointing cult. Could be better.

Natasha Bride

I very much enjoyed that short birdsong interlude. That would be a lovely thing to have during every episode, even interview episodes (it might be the only effective way to interrupt Sam Harris mid-monologue).

DJ Wearing

Decoding the Gurus, just one big, shitty cult. Shitty cult leaders and equally shitty followers. We all need to take some accountability for this. 😂

Neil vdp

Matt if you come to Philadelphia we are a foodie city and I know the best burger places! But is HOT in the summer!

Petition for Russell Brand trigger warnings

Think you've missed the point with UK election. Labour got 1.5% more vote share than last time, and 6.7 LESS than 2017. Reform won the election for Labour. The scary truth is that Britain is more right wing than ever.

Paul Sees

There is good food in the UK!

Christopher Kavanagh

“Lord of the idiots”. Lmfao. Great one Matt

Julie

“Rick Rubin is always baiting me. He’s the best”-Weinstein. Dying to say ‘so he’s the master baiter?’

Kgar

Where will you be in US Matt? Burger would be grand 😎

Kgar

You and Liam having a cheeky Nando's

David Noble

The fact that the best food you could find here in the UK was Nandos makes me very sad

Tash

CERN (Crazy Erroneous. Ridiculous Nerfs) large guru collider O and I love this…I think it’s an olive branch you offer for peace, and a fig leaf for… modesty :)

Desma

From some earlier episode I recall mention of an uncle of the brothers who prided himself on being a nonconformist thinker, but I could be mistaken.

Linda Sears

“ffs somebody slap him” had me cackling like a maniac

Idan Ca

Read that sub stack by Andrew gold and I hate to use a guru phrase but wow that is some low quality criticism. Does he know that the main podcast episodes are free? Does he know that you’re both academics and not full time influencers? I’ve found it quite interesting following this pod how many people seem to think that critically analysing and publishing content doing so is “not real content” or just “making money off others work”

YellowDreams

“He’s not serious about that beer” - I burst out laughing. God these people are ridiculous

Jarod S

I have a bit of a pet theory about this. Both brothers have learning disabilities (Bret is Dyslexic and Eric has some other unspecified learning disorder) and I get the impression that they struggled in school, but were otherwise intelligent and curious but never quite fit in. I personally have ADHD and have experienced the same thing - it sucks feeling like you're intelligent but you're living in a world that doesn't 'get' you and the tendency can be to think that 'they' are all wrong but that you 'get it'. I look at the Weinsteins and see a lot of their behaviour as like my adolescent self, with a giant chip on my shoulder about feeling different to other people. I think this is common with a lot of people who are 'neurodivergent' but some of us grow out of it and others carry it for life. Again, just my pet theory based on my own experiences. I'm sure there are other factors, but I'd be surprised if they didn't play some role in how they turned out.

Will

Listening to Eric this time made me really curious what their parents were like and how they contributed to the extreme narcissism of these two brothers.

YellowDreams

Now it makes sense about the subreddit. I go there from time to time and have been responding to some of the BS with "Don't you even listen to the podcast?" Goes to show my naivete that folks only went on there secondary to the podcast.

Cesare, But Def Not A Borgia

I almost worked on Forgetting Sarah Marshall. They wanted to use an old stock shot of an airplane, but our film lab's equipment chewed it up. My boss and I had to try to upres it from a video tape version. We worked hard on it, it looked ok. I went to see the movie, they used a different shot. I was sad at the time, but I'm so proud now to say I never worked on Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Bevin Flynn

Russell seems to be adapting that rapid-fire, verbose speaking style he’s already developed into a new purpose. And, yeh, it’s reminiscent of established of Charismatic/Revivalist/Evangelical Christian preaching styles

Nancy Hale

An awesome crystal cave of an episode! Looking forward to Editor Anxious Andy’s “We respond to critical feedback” entry.

Nancy Hale

That Russel Brand clip made me feel ill. He's been beyond the pale for a while but ffs. I don't think I can ever watch Forgetting Sarah Marshall again 😫

Kyle

Eric remains the final boss of secular guruism, just an absolutely insufferable blowhard of the most epic proportions. An exceptionally disordered human mind and a remarkable spectacle to behold.

Kyle Wilson

we need an AI image of Matt and Chris slaying the other academics who want their spot on the summit of the mountain of their fields. Also @chris I think you mean "olive branch" instead of "fig leaf."

Jamison Shipley

Someone’s already on it haha, came here to say the same.

Joe Chiarenzelli

The lack of self-awareness in Eric—“I’m the big gangster so don’t risk crossing my intellectual path, or you’ll be sorry little guy” is in the same conversation as “all academics are kill or be killed, but we lift each other up here in podcast land.”

Linda Sears

Buy me a veggie burger in New York!

Daniel Greene

Yep. Even Tyler overuses it IMO and i like Tyler's output a lot! At least he's often doing so with a wink.

Roscoe 112

The core Straussian idea is a hipster interpretation of a text where the true intended or additional esoteric meaning is hidden behind the apparent surface reading. Usually it entails reading into the text what you want to find with little in the way of evidence to back it up. Historically most of the Strauss followers in academia were relegated to political science departments. My guess is Eric’s use of “straussian” is in line with Tyler Cowen’s more minimal colloquial use. In practice it’s just the galaxy brain meme and/or justification for online weirdos to fit the “great books” into their extreme ideology.

rooftowel

The Russell Brand praying section was so terrible to listen to because the incantatory style, the rapid pace delivery without any catching of breath, and the repetitions of “we pray, “our lord,” or “our holy father” to fill in any awkward pauses is so familiar. This is exactly like those televangelists of the 80s.

Linda Sears

Russell and Alex was disgusting! No matter what religion, nothing even sacred should ever come out of either of their mouths! 🤮

Chandra Collins

Love the last lines at the end of the episode. “Screw you Russel Brand”. The best.

Julie

Did Joe really say the Dems are in a cult?! But MAGAS are not? They wear matching hats and repeat lies! Ugh! 😱🤥🤮

Chandra Collins

Matt, why your visit to the U.S.? Just in time for our crazy election season? Come to Cali, and I’d buy you a burger! There is a local Irish pub here, too, in Burbank!

Chandra Collins

Eric and Terrance going back and forth sounds like movie scientists explaining hollow earth on Godzilla

Raysofmarie

Actually you can visit Warsaw and buy me food. I know good restaurants and good burgers, probably cheaper than in UK.

aneladgam_varelse

Come to Wyoming Matt, you must see Yellowstone NP !🐻🦬🫎

Lillie

Which major cities is Matt planning to visit in the US?

Kelley

Turf Tavern!

Christopher Kavanagh

Really Top episode- just finished- so much good new material- Matt becoming more unleashed- F bombs everywhere for ‘Christian’ Brand…And the return of the ‘Eric’… the king of cringe - forgot how much I can’t stand/ can’t not listen to his proclamations… A rich vein…. Suspect it’s gonna get more intense as we lead up to the US elections where who knows some enlightened centrist gurus who just ask questions may reveal themselves to speak with forked tongue….

Brainbiter

Chris was at a pub called the TERF Cavern!? I've heard this gender thing is basically the war of the worlds in the UK, but gosh!

Exai

You know the date was specifically 1st full week of Scottish School Holidays…. And huge issue with new postal voting …

Brainbiter

Matt earns so much from patreon that he can afford buying burgers for patreon. Wealth redistribution!

aneladgam_varelse

I was/am just chucking out some background stuff regarding the labyrinthine UK voting system. Another couple of complicators were very low turn out (people who voted -- which is interesting given how sunny it was in most of the UK and how was held on a Thurs, usually a good day to get a reasonable turn out -- only around 60% of the potential voters voted); and quite a lot of one-issue voting (usually a sign of general political malaise). I've not checked these numbers but I heard on an interview that Reform, if one assumes they were mostly Tory voters, may have helped the Conservatives lose/ Labour win around 100 seats. This would still mean Labour would have probably won, but there would then have been possibility for a coalition government. *If* that is true, Reform was a pretty big factor. Edit: 'what the **** is going on' by Mark Steel is really funny on the recent UK election for those interested. 2Edit: and news from Iran regarding their new president!

Ymirsdreams

Dunno- not sure it’s that different an approach for Scottish elections other than PR taken into account. But only one way to find out…system does feel broken though - and that’s not taking ‘House of ‘Lords’ into account.. also Chris’ visit seemed to be describing’Broken Britain’ in a nutshell 🤣- Radical troublemaker…

Brainbiter

Yup- similarly in Scotland- similar share between 2 left of centre parties ( one pro independence)but massive disparity in representation. Labour only around 35% of vote with massive seat majority. Poor turnout cf historically emphasising Chris’ point that less enthusiasm than need for change after decade + conservative rule and chaos . May be increased pressure for electoral reform / PR in UK given challenges to democracy in general but England always resistant ( Scottish parliament elections have significant PR element already)

Brainbiter

For the first time ever the Lib Dems got the same percentage as seats, which was down to clever targeting of seats. Labour was almost as disciplined but has room for improvement. Reform just came 2nd in a lot of places.

Nina Davies

I meant hear, obviously. FLUFF

john statham

On another podcast, every time the hosts make a mistake (Misuse/Mispronounce a word/get the name of something wrong) The Patreon members draw attention to it and call a ‘Flub’. 47 minutes in and there have been 7 such events thus far. From now on I shall call ‘Fluff’ any time I see one.

john statham

If that was the case though the campaign would have been different. Everyone knows they are operating on first past the post.

Christopher Kavanagh

I have never heard old Nigel described as a Christian defender of democracy before. Mostly he likes his image to be that of 'normal bloke down the pub' or 'weirdo with binoculars watching refugees in small boats cross the channel.' Being extremely relieved by yesterday's election result, I enjoyed listening to reform voters phone into LBC and insist that Old Nige was not PM due to some sort of first past the post conspiracy. They have that in common with Chomsky and his conviction that Corbyn won in 2017. Someone even believed they had been disenfranchised because there were no Reform candidates on his ballot paper.

Nina Davies

(Background up to date info for non UK listeners), one of the best sources if people listening want to check out data: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4nglegege1o Idk is this is mentioned, but in the UK there tends towards a big disparity between the number of representatives each party gets in the main legislative chamber (the House of Oiks... I mean Commons) and the vote share (how many people voted for which party). This recent election saw 33% of the vote share go for Labour (who won the most seats due to the system), 24% to the Conservatives, and 14% to Reform. Given the current system, Labour would most likely have won, but were the system representative by percentage and Reform to not had formed, it would have likely been another Conservative win.

Ymirsdreams

OMG Russell Brand = 🤪😵‍💫💩
