Next Guru: Yuval Noah Harari

We did a streamer... now an academic.

Yuval has been on the list for a while and now seems as good a time as any.

If you have any specific material for decoding that you would recommend let us know. We want long form content that is representative but covers some of the reasons he is controversial.

Will provide the selected source material when we find it!

Comments

He's controversial because he thinks Spice World is an under-rated avant-garde masterpiece.

This TED interview (audio only) from last year is 70 minutes long. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7DohVZS5Yo I guess it covers his current ideas in some depth.

Roland Weber

Malcolm Gladwell 2.0 but with History.

Brainbiter

Liberals like him, has done Ted Talks, he's an easy target

Matt

Yes but why does Twitter hate him so much? I get the tension you describe but the hate seems a little telling.

Max

More likely the popularizers dilemma, tending towards oversimplification and big ideas that are either too bold or too idiosyncratic. With the level of galaxy brain he has it's unavoidable. There is a tension between what is appealing to a general audience (grand narrative) and relaying a more careful, well researched state of relevant literature (unknowns, competing claims, etc)

I just started reading Sapiens too. I didn't know much about him, but was impressed with an interview he gave on The Late Show.

Cesare, But Def Not A Borgia

Hate to say it but imo: Yuval is controversial in part because lesser people get jealous. Jealous of his success, confidence, the breadth of ideas and willingness to step outside present day orthodoxies. The guy is trying to get you to think, and for the most part has done a pretty good job.

Max

I will always be grateful toward Yuval for speaking with clarity and sharpness against the anti democratic turn Nethanyau tried to orchestrate

Donkey kong

Palate cleanser after Piker.

Omg I'm dreading this one. I really like Yuval. From my perspective, Harari's insights are kinda bland when put under the microscope. But, imo, he's truly one of the most "neutral" big name public intellectuals out there. A little galaxy brained to be sure, a bit of a Cassandra, but very thoughtful without the faux grandeur of a true guru. Put him through the wringer guys!
