Julia Ebner Interview on Extremist Groups & Networks

Partially edited interview with author and researcher Julia Ebner on extremist groups, their social dynamics, and connections with gurus.

Enjoy!

True. What I find particular concerning is the way the other hard right gurus are defending and promoting him. I think this has the potential to actually make him more popular rather than less :-( Grossest of them all IMO is Ben Shapiro falsely conflating casual sex with rape and saying it's hypocritical of the mainstream media to condemn him for rape now that he's allegedly become monogamous, when they didn't condemn him before when they knew he was promiscuous. It a completely insane argument to any reasonable person but I reckon Ben's audience will eat it up and Russell will pick up some more fans from him.

Emma

I feel like he's escalated his guru spiel a lot since you rated him. That video where he's comparing his current plight to Jesus on the cross is just phenomenal.

This was a really solid interview. I loved your guest Julia Ebner! More please! It would be lovely to have her back!

I think it was a good interview and it was interesting hearing about the dynamics of the far right wing. Her view on left wing extremism was very uninformed. She also falls I into the issues that most extremist researchers do and takes a modern liberalism as the default kind of politics.

Giovanni

Does she know you call her Julian behind her back? :P

Paul Bowman

Yeah. I would agree with DtG here, and I speak as a self-identified far-leftist. While there may not be an agreed formal definition (theoretical frameworks differ too much), the distinction between far-left, centre-left, centre-right and far-right are part of common parlance and have a rough consensus meaning

Paul Bowman

Yeah I’d talked with Julian about Quilliam a few years back so was aware of that but good for her to discuss publicly.

Christopher Kavanagh

Sorry English isn’t my first language. I’m not sure I understand. Is there reports and articles about left wing antisemitism in general in the form of implying Jews control the media or that’s the allegations against corbyn or both?

Tobias nilsson

Awesome interview guys. Really enjoyed Julia's academic approach and logical way of explaining things, found her to be a bit like Kathleen Belew but with a German accent hehe :) BTW, thank you Chris for asking about her past work with Quilliam. I had mentioned the fact to you guys in a comment here when I knew you were going to interview her. Julia's answer was really interesting. Looks like with or without Maajid Nawaz, Quilliam has always been a dodgy and insincere organisation. I have no problems with them ONLY focusing on extremist Muslims, but obviously the way they treated her with regards to Tommy Robinson's direct threats is pretty emblematic of their hidden agendas and lack of consistency!

It's just a descriptive that refers to a far-left political perspective, that does not imply there is necessarily an equivalent tendency towards violence in modern times. I think we covered that actually?

Christopher Kavanagh

What I’m always confused about… Why you use term ”far-left” even that it’s rhetoric used by far-right to justify their actions and violence? There is historical far-left terrorist groups of course, but in modern times it’s not a symmetrical comparison. Please check out fantastic interview of David Neiwert at Consprituality 170. He wrote about it in a book called “The Age of Insurrection”. Keep up the good work! Finland is listening.

Excellent, thanks!

It's there. If interested there are reports, articles and books that delve into it. In the modern era, it tends to come through sympathy for the plight of the Palestinians. Criticising Israel's actions does not make you anti-semitic though, it's the whole thing of implying utter control of all mainstream media and that the destruction of Israel falls within reasonable political goals. In any case here is a book published in 1984, republished in 2005 so long before anything to do with Corbyn that might be interesting: https://www.workersliberty.org/files/2020-11/thatsfunny.pdf

The gurometer scores are for the content we covered. We don't update unless we cover some new material and, honestly, this is not really out of line with how we saw Russell then and now. I don't think this would really change anything about how much of a secular guru he is, just more evidence of what an abusive prick he is.

Christopher Kavanagh

Agree. Least surprising twist ever.

Emma

And I am not the least bit surprised, sadly. His incredible ego-centrism, and a certain kind of accessible charisma, combined with a past of (freely admitted, and even worn as a badge of honor) addictive behaviors, including sex, makes it almost inevitable.

Suzan Lemont

A little bit off topic but it seems Russell Brand is the first of your secular gurus to be accused of being a sexual predator. Maybe worth adjusting his gurometer score?

Emma

I don’t doubt it exists. Because antisemitism is found in all groups. But I also want to know more about this common left wing antisemitism. I know there was a lot of attacks on Corbyn but not sure what it is he did.

Tobias nilsson

I have noticed similarities in people who are susceptible to cults or high control groups lately. There's always a statement about " changing the world" or " helping others," or " maximizing potential" or similar and they often jump from one to the next.

Jennydiver

I'm curious about the comment that anti-Semitism is a common trait between the far-right and far-left - as an anarchist I am unfamiliar with anti-Semitism on the left at all.
