What is a Secular Guru?
Added 2023-07-18 10:42:59 +0000 UTCThere is a lot of confusion around 'gurus', what we mean by the word, and why we talk about 'secular' gurus.
We also suspect many have never listened to our previous episode on the Gurometer(!) so here we go back over things to try and clarify our approach and the definitions we use.

You could, for example, take aspects of the gurometer to measure how much of a grifter, crank, or cult leader archetype they represent. A modern secular guru, however, encompasses all three of those archetypes

I’m sure this fits somewhere in the gurometer, but it is irksome that the worst of the secular gurus use establishment data when it confirms their views yet apply conspiratorial thinking when the establishment evidence does not. Basically, the “orthodox” world serves their self-aggrandizing narratives either way. And those who have academic credentials seem loathe to completely dismiss the backgrounds that gave them entrance to the platforms they have today.

2023-07-18 18:40:45 +0000 UTCLex’s interview with Bibi highlighted something you discussed in other gurus, which is they don’t come prepared with the requisite background knowledge to speak. Sam Harris’s interview with Charles Murray and subsequent debate with Ezra Klein comes to mind where he says he hasn’t read Bell Curve but goes on to discuss it for hours. Lex similarly brought no knowledge of the issues he asked Bibi about, and he had nothing to say when Bibi responded to his questions by stating Lex’s premises were wrong. That’s inviting a debate but Lex would need to know something to get Bibi to speak further in any productive manner.
