*Christmas Special* with Helen Lewis on the New Gurus & a Gurus Christmas Quiz
Added 2022-12-21 06:10:35 +0000 UTCThere is a new challenger on the Guru analysis front.
Previous guest (and well-known journalist & writer) Helen Lewis has just released a series on the BBC on the 'New Gurus'. It is very good.
We decided to invite her back for an end-of-year chat about the series and gurus more generally.
In addition, Helen is a professional-level quiz master, so she made us an end-of-year Gurus quiz. So stick around after the discussion to see which of us is the greatest decoder... or is it the most tragic person? One of the two.
Elon is still coming this week.

2022-12-28 17:47:12 +0000 UTCI'm an anthropologist. I am much more interested in regional differences than in broad sweeping generalisations. However, if you take an urban street or village, each with three pubs, they are all likely to attract different punters. Within that distinction, a Sunday Lunchtime is likely to attract a family group and a Tuesday evening is likely to attract a male only 'regular'.

2022-12-26 14:32:32 +0000 UTCPubs are only family places at lunchtime. In some areas men go to the pub with their mates and women go to the pub with their own mates - bars look a bit segregated even though there is no formal rule. In student areas and in cities this is very different ...... although there usually are still a few 'local pubs' where more traditional social norms remain.

2022-12-24 08:16:53 +0000 UTCThis was so good! So entertaining listening to the banter. I only got two of the quiz answers correct. I don't really know that many gurus to be honest. Probably not a bad thing. Also the point Helen made about men's spaces disappearing is a good one; I hadn't heard that before. I hadn't even considered the fact that pubs used to be "men only" and now they're less like that. Lots of food for thought.
