Interview with Julian Walker on Conspirituality, Spiritual Gurus, & Culture Wars (Audio) *UNEDITED*
Added 2022-02-22 07:16:37 +0000 UTCAudio of the video version.
"We have a meandering and long overdue chat with Julian Walker about a range of topics including Conspirituality, US & non-US Culture wars, podcasting & politics, and other sundry matters.
We accept full responsibility for making Julian give hot takes on the Trucker Convoy too.
I like how the light in Julian's video slowly disappears as the conversation progresses.
Hope you guys enjoy!"

Great interview, once again. I like how you/Julian described the 'Tim Ferris-inspired' health/supplement-obssessed subculture towards the beginning of the podcast. I find myself being 'pulled' in and out of that subculture from time to time and need to take a step back and situate it as part of a broader social context, as you did. I also was not aware of the Conspirituality podcast, so thanks for that as well!

2022-02-27 21:56:01 +0000 UTCSuper interesting discussion. One of my favourites thus far. Thanks! On the trucker convoy takes - the international coverage has often been poor. To the point that I cancelled my long time subscription to the NYT because my confidence in their international reporting was just trashed over a series of days. There were two faces of the protest - the one that got most of the press was the block party in front of Parliament with the hot tub and the pigs on spits and dancing and loud mouths and the signs. That was disruptive, and that was an inconvenience. But to apply those characterizations to what the neighbourhoods behind that area went through is a gross disservice to those residents. It was far, far beyond that, and the failures of empathy or comprehension that show up in opinion pieces about it are cringeworthy.

2022-02-24 02:17:00 +0000 UTCMaybe too glib but it does seem like a mountain being made out of a molehill. The same thing is going on in Japan and it's such a minor issue. Kids don't like masks, they don't wear them right, teachers don't like teaching in them, and it is hard for young kids but... most people accept there is a global pandemic and temporarily there will be inconveniences. No-one is expecting it to continue forever but I think the level of hysteria that surrounds the topic is really unwarranted. There are always trade offs but the notion that there is about to be a generation of kids who can't communicate because of masks... seems unlikely.

2022-02-23 16:18:04 +0000 UTCI haven’t listened to this yet but as a fan of both your podcasts since the early days of both I’m psyched. Plus thank you for all the splendid output in the past few days! So much to listen to!

2022-02-23 12:25:49 +0000 UTCThank you. Thank you. Thank you. An excellent, excellent, excellent discussion that may just allow me to reconnect to friends in California despite all the sticky political and anti-political talking points that might otherwise have gotten in the way. I am sharing widely.

2022-02-22 19:11:27 +0000 UTCExcellent discussion! The Conspirituality podcast is one of my favorite listens as well. The world of new age is the land of milk and honey for grifters. Edit: (accidentally hit enter) One small nit to pick is that you all got a bit hand wavey about the kids and masks issue. Sure, kids love masks and playing pretend. But they don't normally do that all day at school. Could there be some negative impact on their social and emotional development at, say, age 5, when they are wearing a mask all day? Seems plausible to me. Is the benefit worth the cost? Do we know? I think it is "too easy" to just dismiss concerns about that. Not sure if I'm using "too easy" correctly, however.

2022-02-22 18:55:47 +0000 UTCI very much enjoyed that. I have quite a lot of New Age Friends and half seem to have dived into the conspiracy hole and talk about 'natural immunity' and 'antibodies' a lot. The other half are very pro this vaccine but have not been believers in vaccinating their children as a rule or giving them paracetamol. That has been about a notion of their child as pure and natural, I think. Faced with a real live pandemic which seems much more real than the threat of measles, they have wanted to vaccinate their children.

2022-02-22 16:22:00 +0000 UTCThe absence of notable accents? I find Conspirituality difficult to listen to because the accents are too heavy going!

2022-02-22 15:42:20 +0000 UTCI grew up in western Canada and work in a very conservative sphere in Ontario so I know the type who are in the convoy and the cause is not noble. People are exhausted and many have bought into conspiracy theories to various degrees.
