Our next guru: Joe Rogan

As mentioned at the end of the last episode, our next Guru episode will be Joe Rogan.

We are considering doing his episode with Tim Pool to try and overload on terrible takes but are open to other suggestions.

I feel like I (Chris) have a handle on Rogan because I've consumes his content on and off for years but still I think this will be a fun one.

Let's see!

Our next guru: Joe Rogan

I'm just arguing that instead of one man having an ice bath we could each have a glass of iced water, comrade.

TBF that does sound a little like a conversation that was had during the cultural revolution... and it did not produce good results.

There is a really interesting comparison to be made between medieval monks and buddhist monks who have lives of effective luxury in comparison to the peasants but who take tithings from them so they can lead lives of contemplation and engage in aesthetic practises so they can share their insights and 'pray' (or engage in 'speaking out') for the betterment of humanity.

I listened to some of that interview out of morbid curiosity. I think the problem with analysing that one though would be that Ben is such a whiny, racist, little narcassist that he actually makes Joe look quite nice and reasonable by comparison.

Emma

Love the content guys. Last comment (maybe). Two more suggestions for source material. His most recent episode with Ben Shapiro: It's clear that whatever liberal views Joe has are hollow and not well thought out. He asks why greedy Wall Street types should be able to make money off of buying and selling stocks. Validity of Ben's response aside, its clear Joe has never thought critically about that topic. Their chat on Israel kind of went the same way. Joe is generally pro Palestine but has a very shallow understanding of the position he's taking. A similar thing happened when Joe and Dan Crenshaw talked about healthcare in America.

Tom

God I'm looking forward to this. I used to defend him as a liberal who just didn't like sjws...covid has seemed to have turned him into Rush Limbaugh.

Peter Kerr

His latest conversation with Alex Jones and Tim Dillon might be a good one too. Suggested Topics of discussion: 1. Pointing out all the times Jones is not fact checked. Joe has bragged at least a dozen times since that he fact checked everything Alex said. 2. The nihilist enjoyment Dillon and Rogan get out of Alex, “lol he’s funny so funny bro, who cares if he’s dangerous”

Tom

The newest episode of JRE with Jocko Willink is also quite the gold mine. It's 3 hours of rambling and includes many all time-favorites such as vaccines, voting fraud, impeachment...

Please do a separate episode on Tim Pool. Don’t combine them. He deserves his own. Besides you guys are running out of Gurus. 😁

Tim Heidecker just released a fantastic Joe Rogan parody with Rajat Suresh and Jeremy Levick. Tim said he set out to have a boring, wandering, nonsense conversation. The result is glorious.

Seconded for the Tristan Harris it does a great job to show his cognitive dissonance on right wing conspiracy theories. I think the problem with a Rogan episode is the sheer volume of content he puts out there and how his fans internalize his ideas. On three different occasions I've ended up talking to people who didn't have a high literacy on history but worked into the convo how great of a loss the burning of the Library at Alexandria was. This used to be a talking point that Joe would bring up every other episode. Explaining the volume is really the only way to decode Rogan. He didn't go straight vax overnight, for months he would ask every guest if they were going to take the vaccine and if they were worried about side effects. At first, the only side effect he seemed to be worried about was a day of feeling sick and then it grew from there. Joe was anti-election hoax on the day of the election but has slowly evolved that opinion. Maybe this is how all Guru's radicalize their fans (and maybe themselves) but its a slow burn which is why I think Rogan has been so effective at spreading harmful ideas.

Tom

Wow. Nicely put - and, yes, precisely.

Looking forward to the big guy, the king of the IDW, although I was hoping for separate Tim Pool episode, there is just so much to cover about Tim Pool that a lot of people don't know. Since he is not really considered part of the IDW he is a more obscure figure.

MaxPlan

Not a regular listener of Joe Rogan, but I dipped back in for the episode with Tristan Harris, and I definitely saw the change. He kept trying to pull the conversation into conspiracy and right wing talking points. The guests were (I think) prepared for this kind of diversion so they had responses to try to recenter the conversation. But it seems that Joe didn’t have the proper immunity to these viral ideas. It’s really weird. It’s like other gurus that you’ve covered that start out somewhat moderate and careful and somehow their resistance to low energy pathways of thought gets worn down and they roll down into the valleys. What is the key to staying above this stuff? What trait? What state?

That image is a Lynchian nightmare. Terrible and enthralling.

Excellent

I think Tim is a pundit more than a guru. And Timbah is doing a series on Tim right now anyway so you can can probably leave Tim in more capable hands. What might be interesting is to analyze how Joe approaches a single topic. Consider that he often interviews more than one person on a topic, one of whom is often an actual expert while the other is a pundit or comedian. A compare and contrast approach might let you two actually analyze the rhetoric instead of going for easy dunks on Joe.

I think this image is going to give me nightmares!

I don't think my soul could handle even brief clips of Tim pool and joe Rogan. If your going for self help joe then do one with one of the many many lifestyle, health type people he has on, especially if you want to hear about the amazing life extending benefits of Sauna! Also (I am a long time listen of JRE and have recently stopped) Covid broke Joe's brain in some way, he wasn't always such a redpilled idiot, perhaps always somewhat of an idiot but he seemed to have less pet theories, especially political ones, and was more humble.

William LEGRAIN

Yes!!

Helen Polemis

Can't wait. He's the sun that most gurus orbit around.

That picture is so insane - and at the same time so à propos - have you been holding onto it for a long time for just such an occasion? (It comes as close to literally hurting the eyes as any I’ve seen in some time…).

Tom Allison

oh my god I am sooo stoked for this. And I agree with Andy 🤢

Leigh Kilgore

Please please please.... for the love of all that is holy.... stop using that image.
