Crossover with Robert Wright

Following Robert Wright's recently developed interest in Weinstein flavoured crack-pottery, we've exchanged some messages about doing crossover interviews.

This is likely to happen in the next month or so. We will likely cover the Weinsteins & IDW, secular Buddhism, alternative & mainstream media ecosystems & how to avoid becoming a guru. Bob's an interesting guy who has written critically about Sam Harris and positively about secular Buddhism (see 'Why Buddhism is True'). He's also a staunch advocate for non-interventionism and has had a rather eclectic assortment of podcast guests.

We think they should be really interesting exchanges as Bob is also someone who is able to both handle and dish out criticisms, and he has indicated he may have some for us about the podcast!

So yep, nothing set in stone yet but just wanted to give you folks a heads up!

If you have any questions/topics that you think would be good to cover, let us know in the comments!

Crossover with Robert Wright

'feel' his subtle body unbalanced. Cmon lads- give him that wee extra push...

i'm pretty sure Robert is itching to offload...he's been very measured in his ' is Eric a crackpot/crank' but back to his buddhist sensibilities, i can

Question for Robert: He often speaks about US interventionism and often claims that people that people who take the US's side on foreign policy against a country like China, do so because they have a negative bias against China, but Ive never heard him address the actual substantive track record of say China's overall problems when he is quick to point out any incidents where US violate international law. This is not related to the Weinsteins but I know you enjoy tangents and I just wanted to bring it up because it doesnt seem to get discussed enough by Mickey(who almost always defers to Bob with regard to foreign policy). Thanks.

He regularly covers a lot of this stuff on his Saturday pod with Mickey Kaus. The show notes for each episode are quite detailed too. I've noticed they tend to worry more about the future of the substack model to journalism.. The problem is substack tends to pool a reader’s resources (time and money) on only a few top teir journalists. And of course there is then the problem of fact checkers, etc.

Question: Being a journalist maybe Robert can comment on this. One of Eric's claims is that we can no longer trust the NYT because the institutions have become so corrupted. I imagine this is false, but I wonder what his thoughts are on journalism in the age of youtube algorithms.

I didn't realize all the other Tim Nguyen's are fake. Those Russian bots are really out to discredit me! Am working on making more math content.

Timothy Nguyen

This is the real Tim Nguyen? Great job on the Eigenbros, we need more math content.

MaxPlan

Can't wait!! Robert is probably the closest anyone comes to my own personal guru

Dayan Weller

YES YES YES! I discovered you after Robert had on Nguyen on to discuss Weiny Eric who kept making references to you guys in that interview. Perfect match!!

Kyle D

He would be a great guest on this pod. I have read his Why Buddhism is True (good contrast for the book club perhaps?). I've also seen him speak. Smart guy.

I read Wright’s The Moral Animal when it came out in the 90’s and have been a fan ever since. Can’t think of any questions right now but looking forward to this. He seems to give the Weinsteins a little more credit than you guys do so that may be interesting to discuss.

Leslie

Sweet, newly introduced to him. Seems an interesting fellow

I hope it's not a trap. "Are Chris and Matt crackpot podcasters?"

Timothy Nguyen

This is really exciting! I loved "Why Buddhism is True." Looking forward to these exchanges!
