Next Guru: Anthony DeMello

As mentioned on the last episode, we are taking a needed holiday from the culture war to delve into our personal gurus.

Anthony DeMello was a Jesuit and Christian mystic who produced some 'popular' lectures about spirituality in the 80s/90s. The now ex-pope, then Cardinal Ratzinger, also issued a warning about how his teachings could be harmful to Christians.

Chris came across his content as a teenager during his Buddhist dalliances and found it very persuasive. But how does he feel about it now? And how will Matt react?

DeMello's content is a little bit awkward to access but there is a 1hr talk of his available here: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x16fohf

I actually really like Anthony, total guru for sure. I hope you do more "historical" gurus. It's interesting to compare these modern culture war gurus to one's from the past. I would also like and episode that dives into the more western Hindu/Buddhist wooie gurus, like ram das.

Can you believe Shelley miscavige, his wife, has been missing for like 10 years, and nobody cares! A scientology episode would be great! Also, consider NXIVM, Keith Raniere is extremely guru-like, and especially wicked. He could easily be the subject of a study on Dark Triad personality traits, and theres a great documentary about it on HBO.

Looking forward to them!

This is a special case but I think we would consider some historical gurus in the future. We’ve discussed doing L Ron Hubbard for example and comparing with David Miscavige.

So far, the Gurus you have tackled have been "current" (also all happen to be alive right now). Are Gurus who are no longer active also on the table? How far back in history are you willing to go?

Ayman Singh

Oh! My somewhat conspiritualist friend talked up DeMello’s book Awareness. I’m sure this will be very interesting.
