Jordan Peterson & Bret Weinstein Episode *RELEASED*

As I'm sure some of you already noticed the Jordan & Bret episode is released! This was a very enjoyable episode, perhaps because of the positive contrast with the anti-vaccine heavy rhetoric from Bret & Heather. Sadly, as the image above shows Jordan is far from immune to such impulses.

Also, clips are now added for the past two episodes:

And... for those who requested access to a transcript (though note it is FAAAR from perfect):

Jordan Peterson & Bret Weinstein Episode *RELEASED*

Loved this episode! The take that their content is neither new nor profound but rather just framed that way (convincingly or not) is so damn refreshing. It cuts through their self-important BS in a very spell-breaking and satisfying way. Regarding smart people who dig JBP, the ones that I know (albeit this constitutes a small sample) seem generally averse to thinking about the concept of systemically granted advantage & power, and I suspect are looking for some palatable justifications as to why they don’t have to.

Loved this episode. I have tried to appreciate JBP and both the Weinstein bros and I just can’t because their content sounds like stoner dorm-room conversations. Very nice to have abbreviated summary and critique.

I have noticed this as well. Really smart people that I know highly rate JBP and it just blows me away. What I often notice with these individuals is that they only rarely look at YouTube/Twitter, so they will see one interesting take but don’t have insight into the narrative of their work. I am so glad Chris and Matt do all the heavy lifting!

Chris Spanos

Fair point!

Listening right now, I think JP is terrible for all kinds of reasons. Yet Matt’s idea of a therapist not getting emotional “involved” with clients is just not right. Doe he discount all experiencial theoretical models like Internal Family systems, Rogers and EFT? Peterson overblown reactions is not getting emotional he’s preening

There does seem a genuine component to JBP that is lacking in some of the other gurus but if you have people everyday telling you how you’ve saved their lives, it must do some number on you.

Christopher Kavanagh

I’m halfway through and I really like that your criticism and humour doesn’t have a mean bite to it. I remember listening to this JBP-BW conversation and being struck by the fact that these two criticize people for exaggerating victimhood, but they always exaggerate their hero status. What I do think you perhaps got wrong is that JBP IS surrounded by people who tell him that he’s saved their lives. I don’t think any narcissism or reverse narcissism applies here - maybe elsewhere. I’ve been to his bible series talks - went to the first one on a whim and then I was hooked bc he’s a fab speaker and I was trying to figure out if he was really horrible. Anyway, people always thanked him for saving their lives afterwards and the guy was totally overwhelmed and flummoxed. It was so raw. I could barely handle watching it from the sidelines. Having said that, I’m disappointed about the ivermectin post.

No worries! And interesting to hear. I think that’s the pipeline part that people worry about and as you indicate there are genuine concerns there. Listen to Heather talk about how reasonable it is for Trump to oppose the election result. No. That’s not honorable at all.

Christopher Kavanagh

Don’t forget Jordan’s crazy long sauna session. Pretty intense. Send my regards to Bret.

Great episode! I particularly resonated with Matt’s point that these guys make really boring stuff sound radical. I have a couple of friends with PhDs who are really into these guys (the reason I’m a Patreon). What worries me is that they get blown away by the most banal takes these guys have. For example, science being a mythology. Sure, if you define mythology in a certain way, a scientific theory is obviously mythology. There is no insight there, only word manipulation. These are extremely intelligent people in many ways, and good human beings generally, but they don’t seem to be able to see through this meaningless twaddle. The scary part is that it has also pushed them into having a sympathetic view about Trump and buying in to some nationalistic BS. Your podcast gives me good ammunition to point out really stupid stuff these guys say and I don’t even have to subject myself to listening to them. Thanks for taking the hit!

I think it’s fair to say Bret is a nut-job.

Ok, two things. First, how is it possible that Jordan Peterson is so sick that he can barely get up in the morning, but also he walks 10 miles a day? And second, today I learned that Bret and I live in the same city! Fun!
