FYI, there's a small shop here selling freeze-dried candies, like starlight mints, $100,000 bars, Oreos, etc. I got some, and I don't think they'll stay in business long, if you get my meaning.

Oh damn. That fan in the laundry is thanks to our 'cheaper builder.' No wonder I hate this house in the winter and summer (it's OK in spring/fall when I can open windows).

Modern building codes typically require three air changes per hour or less. Significantly tighter homes require mechanical ventilation for health and air quality. Cheaper builders will rely on a bath fan rather than xRV with dedicated make-up. The make-up air for your fan is coming through cracks in your walls, etc. xRVs save a decent amount of energy, hence the use of enthalpy wheels in commercial buildings. However, outside of particularly humid climates HRV are usually sufficient. Vented dryers have a huge impact, see Matt Risinger's video on his ventless dryers. An older home with a heat pump in your area undergoing modest improvements to its tightness is expected to save 1 MWh of energy per year .
