A toast to the new year

Hello, everyone!

Apparently 2024 is on its way out - which doesn’t seem possible! But unless my calendar is lying to me, that is in fact the case. I’ve never been one to do year-in-review type posts or anything like that, and boy has this been... a year - but it has genuinely been one of the most impactful for me, both professionally and personally. So what the hell, getting a little sappy I guess.

The new office/production facility/warehouse/studio (still haven’t really decided what it is) was the best decision I’ve made in a long time. This job has never really felt that real to me - making videos was the thing I did in my off time for fun, not a career - and so it never gelled in my brain as The Thing That I Do. Simply having “work” be a place that is only for work has done wonders for my mental health. And getting to say “I have an office!” grants me some feelings of legitimacy/professionalism which, though I sometimes question my motives to desire those feelings, I can’t say isn’t refreshing. Impostor syndrome never ends, folks!

All of this is thanks to you. TC would absolutely not be possible without your support - so thank you.

And could you believe I have had the office for a year? Lease started Jan 1 - wow. I can confidently state that at this time I am fully settled-in, with routines, even! Though (and this is a big reason I’m writing this text post) I unfortunately have one of those chaotic brains which means the stuff around me which is not relevant to the task at hand becomes invisible. Which means… the office is in a state and needs a bit of a reset. That, combined with a few personal projects which suddenly needed to move up to right now before I then join a family road trip, means I’ll have to deprioritize Content Making for a short while. January is usually a pretty good month for YouTube creators to slow down, so I might as well take the opportunity to get things sorted. But I wanted to make sure I made my intentions clear before anyone thought I had disappeared - you may not hear from me until around the middle of January.

2025 will hopefully be many things but one thing it will be is The Year of the Car - I have long been wanting to make videos on the amazing complexity of (not-that) modern engine management systems. You can imagine the many motivations I have for that - lots of misconceptions out there and persnickety opinions I’d like to challenge! - and now that I have the space to film a car in my own controlled environment, well I’ll be on the hunt for something. I have some pretty specific things I’m looking for so depending on how the search goes I may enlist your help finding a good match, but I’ll let you know if it comes to that.

But, before this drags into the next decade, I hope you all have a happy and fulfilling new year. And thank you so much for your support!

-Alec

Speaking of toast, I think your review of the Panasonic NB-G110P Toaster Oven is looooong overdue. A cult favorite amongst both tech nerds and wonks, it contains both a far-infrared and near-infrared element. Best thing since sliced bread needed......something! I would challenge its speed against conventional toasters, much less toaster ovens.

happy new year TC. I hope you make a vid about c41 film development, your photography series is really good!

Adam

Happy new year Alec! If you run out of car content, I would love to see a video on heat-pump clothesdryers. Where does the water go? How much energy does it use? How long does a regular cycle take? Is it actually gentler on clothes than a traditional dryer?

krallja

Happy new year, Alec! I just watched Episode #244 by @TheChinaShow, which reminded me of a series of videos that you made years before about e-ink and that specifically mentioned Boox. From 47:00 to 1:31:45, they discuss TikTok, ByteDance, and ByteDance's A.I. installed on Boox tablets, if I understand correctly. I've also watched @RyanMcBethProgramming's discussion of TikTok, and, though this might be slightly distant from your usual subject matter, I'm very curious about your opinion on this situation.

Your videos make me smile and I love them. I love the way you explain things, it's engaging. I'm not big into YouTube, only discover things through my husband. There are only a few channels I actually care about (you, Geowizard, History for granite, driving 4 answers). Never change 🩷 (P.s. I discovered the Casio AT 552, can't find much info on it. If you are looking for a topic......😉)

YES! So down for car content!!! I’ve been messing with cars for years but ecus and tuning is forever elusive to me. Please help out in this.

Mildly disappointed to not see anything Automatic Beyond Belief™ in this post, given the title 😉 Happy New Year, Alec!

Happy New Year Alec, finding your youtube channel was genuinely (and remains so) one of my most favourite ever things on the Internet (and trust me, I've been online for a VERY long time). Enjoy your quieter January and I look forward to these car videos very much. Do you think you will ever do more on V2x technologies? I cannot express how desperate I am for this here in the UK, as we have 2 x EVs and it's extremely rare that at least 1 of them isn't on the drive, with it's huge battery just.....sat there. Groan! Anyway, congrats on the office anniversary and all the best!

Love your channel! Happy New Year from San Antonio, Texas 👋

I've always told people if you describe to Rube Goldburg how a 1960 automobile engine worked, he'd go, "Naw, way too complicated." You should show how the timing belt was turned by the crankshaft that turned the distributor that merely was a spinning switch that gave power to a particular sparkplug at a certain time in the 360º turn of the crankshaft that exploded the gasoline in a piston at the precise time that caused the piston to shoot downward that caused the crankshaft to turn. Once people finish picking up the pieces of their brain that's all over the floor because their minds were blown, you can go over carborators.

Good to hear your doing well. Happy New Year

Happy new year Alec to you and your family. I recently became a subscriber to your channel and Patreon and I really enjoyed your videos. As a technology nerd myself, you have managed to give me some insight into various aspects of tech that I have never realized before. Keep up the great work and I can’t wait to see what is to come in 2025.

Happy new year to you and thank you for the content, your humour and your attention to detail

Happy new year! Idea for naming your Studio: call it the TCHQ or as a allusion to Top Gear the „Technology Connections Technology Center“

Sebastian K.

Happy New Year Alec :) Thanks for the edutainment and keep remembering that you are awesome.

Happy New Year Alec! Hopefully car stuff means some more collabs with Aging Wheels! (If that is what you want)

Kevin Milczewski

Happy New Year! If you're doing videos on cars and engines, one video I would love would be on Auto start/stop systems. In social media comments there are always lots of claims that "it will wear out the starter so fast", but my experience is that an auto start/stop start is completely different from a normal start, and I'd love to finally understand how that all works. Looking forward to engine management systems! They are kind of a black box but have been in every car for how many decades now?

You are one of the best creators on YT. Stop feeling like an imposter!

How weird is it to read it in your voice (just in my head)? :) Happy new year!

Thanks for what you do! 🎵 year-endingly smooth jazz 🎵

Niraj Sanghvi

Happy New Year Alec, I am really looking forward to the car videos. Been a semi-big car nerd and TC enjoyer, so having both mixed with topics that really get into the nitty-gritty will be exciting!

Maxus_Spielt

Thank you too, Alec-your channel is one of my Favorites! Happy New Year!

It's just turned 2025 when you dropped this post. I though you are starting off the new year with a new Toaster video :D

Dukefazon

Just a quick thanks for all of the work you do, and absolutely no imposter syndrome! It’s not out of line to say that I have you, James Burke (yes the Connections guy) and Tim Hunkin from Secret Life of Machines in the same circle of people who excel at explaining the ordinary in an engaging fashion and our world sure needs more education right now. I’d love to see you tackle projects outside the studio at some point!

The Griffiths Family

Happy new year! I can't wait for more amazing content! And if you ever need to discuss random oscilloscope nonsense, I'm good for it!

Malcolm Parish

Happy new year! I'm thrilled with everything you've accomplished this year, and it's so satisfying to see a creator that bucks the "fast paced, jump cuts, fart jokes, click bait" recipe succeed. If you need anything to help with the Year of the Car, I've got decades of experience working on cars, including far too much work into a project car that has a custom (Megasquirt) ECU. Happy to lend anything from knowledge to parts. Then again, you have access to Robert so... My offer is pretty meek in comparison.

David K

happy new year from the future of 2025!

Tomek Gzyl

Happy New Year! I'm glad the new office/warehouse has been successful and productive, I can't wait to see if a design or two pops up in a YT store featuring ugly Xmas sweaters, your selections are the best! 🎉🍀🌠

Happy new year Alec.
