The EV-charger-powered shop heater

It's a Christmas miracle!

https://youtu.be/kTctVqjhDEw

Or rather, I could get a standard J1772 inlet quickly enough and decided I would just reshoot the talking head with the necessary script modifications. In the end I think this was the better route to go anyway - I am able to explain in a little more detail why the charging station thinks it's connected to a car.

The last couple of years I've released new videos publicly on Christmas Morning - and I'll be doing that with this. So I'm going to hurriedly get captions done before I head home.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

That is a lot of NEMA connectors! I am glad I live where IEC 60309 (CEE-17) connectors are used for higher power stuff (16A and up). They are cheap, rugged and only a few variants: Blue (3-pin) for single phase 230V and red (5-pin) for three phase 400V. They come in 16A (3.7kW single phase/11kW 3-phase) and 32A (7.2kW/22kW) variants (and 63A and 125A for 3-phase). For residential use it is mostly the 16A versions and possibly 32A 3-phase used.

That's great, they don't seem to do a Type 2 version yet, but hopefully it's in the pipeline.

Once again a reason why I like living where three phase power is commonplace. I have a workshop which I mostly use to repair agirucltural machinery. I have a 9kW electric heater and if the repair is not urgent I just wait for a day when electricity is cheap(ish) and heat up the shop. An empty shop gets warm pretty fast but if I drive a few tons of cold cast iron in it takes a while to heat up.

With a fossil burning car, the residual heat after you park in the garage is usually enough to leave the car clear of snow and ice by morning. Not sure how much residual heat an EV would have in it to slowly release to the garage while charging overnight, but that alone might be enough.

I liked the use of VHS tapes as a work surface.

Of course it wouldn't be all that hard to install chargers at the apartment I live in but I'm over 50 and probably won't be alive when that happens someday decades from now... I was thinking about buying a house but Trump got reelected and might have to flee the state (or possibly the country???) so not buying a house now! Just hoping to not have my life totally destroyed in the next few years!

Michaela Pereckas

But can you power christmas lights with it?

"I'm mildly annoyed this cheap heater got this nice contactor" 🤣

Ecoflow sells an adapter that allows you to use a J1772 connection to charge it as well. Pretty similar to just charging a car but it is a commercial product that uses the connector and isn't a car https://us.ecoflow.com/products/ev-x-stream-adapter-delta-pro

One thing that I don't like about how you put the connector on is that if you (or someone else) forgets to turn the heater off, you might have a potential for arcing. If it were up to me, I'd use an E-Stop button to interrupt the control signal; push in to "turn off" the supply, pull out to "turn on". Likely not necessary, but should make it a fair amount safer to use. (you can tell that I didn't finish watching the video before commenting)

Your idea is pretty good too. I wasn't really thinking to keep the garage warm enough to work in (that would massively increase charging time). I was thinking it could keep the garage above freezing. I don't get snow where I live, but it seems like an easy way to clear all the snow off a car that just came in from a blizzard.

Kenneth Garrett

You mentioned that king may be less of a concern because it’s a resistive load. Do loads with high reactance arc more?

Max Goldstein

That's a fun idea! But in my situation, I will mostly be using the heater with the car parked outside - my garage isn't very big!

Technology Connections

That gives me an idea for EVs (if they have resistive heaters) to have a garage heater mode. Just plug it in with the windows open, and it can run the heater off building power and use the exterior thermometer as a thermostat to keep the garage warm.

Kenneth Garrett

Yay, glad it all worked out

eaglebeagle

Still counts.

I'm starting now, but it will be Christmas Day here in 3 minutes.

DrumBrakes

Merry Christmas to all!

Gary Graham

This is the best Christmas Eve present ever!
