And the connextras video

This is mostly just a weird thing my dishwasher does but of course there's some other trivia, too

Oh, and the captions are done on the main channel video!

I'm giving up trying to figure out Patreon's method of sending messages and just going to post here, sorry for jumping in. I wanted to tell Alec that I joined here just for a month to 'buy him a cuppa joe' or whatever it's called now. Just to say THANKS! for the info about the dishwasher. I'm not hangin' around, just wanted to say 'HEY!' and THANKS!

Mike

When the installer set up my new dishwasher about 4 years ago, he said to use powder or pods but not gels.

The first wash I did with my new dishwasher (5 years old) took forever so this checks out.

Brian Miller

You know why people doing manual washing dishes before loading the dishwasher? Apparently Because they use pods and they don’t have a pre-wash detergent there :D

For the record, I'm team gel when it comes to dishwasher detergent. Specifically, I've had excellent results with Cascade Original. It's got a fair amount of bleach in it and it cleans like nobody's business. After the first dishwasher video where I learned about the hard vs. soft water issue, I tested my water, found it was very soft, and started adding detergent only to the barely-visible line that I previously had no idea existed. Before that I was just filling the whole thing like a FOOL! Possibly related to the gel-with-bleach use: I just replaced my ancient, failing dishwasher but before I did I disassembled bits of it to make sure nothing was obstructing the macerator. I was shocked at how clean everything was, even the lower areas where water tended to accumulate. I assume this was a side effect of using detergent with bleach.

I'm not sure what "go evaporated the water" means (I'm sure it's a typo but I can't parse it) but I just got a brand new dishwasher a couple weeks ago with a stainless steel interior and it's got a heating element.

But what I've never understood about the whole "run the hot water before starting the dishwasher" thing is: since the dishwasher already has a water temperature sensor, why don't they just program it to kick on the drain pump immediately when beginning to fill the basin with pre-wash water and only stop the pump once the incoming water has reached a "hot" temperature (or has stopped getting any hotter, or a fail-safe timeout is reached). It just seems like lazy programming to me that they put the onus on the operator to do that for them. Doesn't really work with the delayed-start option either.

Probably you don't want to run the heating element when it's covered in grease from the dirty pre-wash water. You need the detergent to have been released to cut the grease before you can safely kick on the heating elements without smoking up the place.

That's why I hate using the word "American" to refer specifically to United States nationals. Canadians are Americans too, as are Mexicans, Salvadorans, Guatemalans, Hondurans, Costa Ricans, Panamanians, Colombians, Venezuelans, Ecuadorians, … … It's just unfortunate that "United Statesian" is such an awkward term.

I don't think it's only the high-end dishwashers that dynamically skip fills. My mid-grade Frigidaire Gallery model says this in its manual: “The DishSense™ Technology checks the soil level on your dishes in the Power Plus, Quick Clean, Normal, and Top Rack cycles. Depending on the soil level, the sensor will determine if additional water fills are needed to clean the dishes or if water fills can be deleted. Cycle time and water usage will vary based on the amount of soil on the dishes. Cycle time will also vary based on the options selected and the incoming water temperature.” Also: “Your dishwasher uses a DishSense™ Technology to understand how heavily soiled the dish load is and to adjust the cycle accordingly. The sensor is calibrated at the end of the cycle. The sensor will not be calibrated for the first cycle run after power has been removed from the dishwasher. To assure you get clean dishes the unit defaults to the cycle option that is suited for heavy soils on this first run after power is restored.” It's kind of amazing what you can find when you RTFM. :D

You can buy even higher end dishwashers then the kitchen aid. Come with water heaters and there was one tier higher then we got that could speed wash in 30 mins. Like a commercial one it was designed to wash fast if you had a lot of parties (or maybe you ran a restaurant at home lol)

Ben's appliance repair has stated that techs see more top panel control boards replacements than front panel. This sounds like a pure preference issue. Also, when you open the door to adjust the program, you have hot steamy water going over your hand. Great tips! Push the drying agent more. The difference in clear glass water spots are amazing!

Mike Bird

Dish washers with metal walls usually don’t have a heating element for drying because the walls go evaporated the water. You must use a rinse agent. We use pods because my wife pours way too much detergent into the washer.

Very interesting! Thank you

I have more questions to explore, particularly related to water temperature. My kitchen sink is on the opposite side of the house from the water. I have a Bosch dishwasher that doesn’t have a heating element (at least visible) (or a macerator 😡) for drying. Would it have an in line water heater element? I almost always run it on a delay cycle so it’s not getting hot water from the tap, but the dishwasher is definitely hot at the end of the cycle. Another question is about why cheap vs expensive dishwashers are mostly a noise difference more. My mid range Bosch seems to be louder than when I first got it, and would love to diy some new/more sound deadening into it. Alec you have made me intensely curious about dishwashers ever since the first video (and the subsequent fights with my prewashing obsessed ex wife). Getting an actual appliance engineer to chime in on this would be amazing.

My favorite grocery store Raleys has Cascade Powder on sale always for lower than off brand. I’m thrilled I stopped using pellets/pods after your first dishwasher video. You are so helpful.

Barbara Ganschow

Oh and fwiw, Amazon is a thing and has powdered dish detergent

Brock Samson

Since the OG versions of this video I’ve been using 7th Generation powder- it’s readily available at my local coop, and the big box is like $8 when on sale. And it works *great*

Something that's been bugging me about the whole "pre-wash water is cold": On anything other than the base models, why don't they just have a water temp sensor in the basin (maybe they already do?!?) and kick on the heater before the pre-wash if the tap water is too cold? Seems easily fixable, and I wonder if some dishwasher testimonials for "better performance" might be because they do just that?

How dare you recognize Mexico is part of North America ;)
