Final captions temporarily delayed - temporary ones available

Ugh. Tonight's not my night. I got more than half-way through the captions and my internet crapped out. I thought I had saved a draft before it went completely away but apparently not.

For now, you should have access to the script as pasted-in, but there will be errors and timing won't be great. I was hoping to get this done tonight because I'm busy all day tomorrow, so I'm very sorry about that! Wide-release of the video will be on Sunday.

Toodles.

Here’s a tip: YouTube supports advanced captions via subtitle files! There’s a support article listing which ones they support (https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2734698?hl=en), but I think the best trade-off between formatting capabilities and simplicity is WebVTT. It takes a bit of learning (the YT support article has a link to the standard), but it’s what I use to caption other people’s videos since it’s easy to understand. You’ll need to use millisecond timestamps in WebVTT files. In Premiere, this means enabling Audio Time Units. Adobe has a support article detailing how to do this: https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/timecode.html#change_how_timecode_is_displayed

It's too bad that YouTube no longer allows other people to create captions for your videos, we could've helped you out.

Do consider signing up for the Starlink beta! I'm using it myself and while still in beta, is quite expensive and has its quirks it's transformational if you have nothing else! It's not at all like satellite broadband of old and perhaps worthy of a video itself!

Thank you for writing the captions!

"Technically I don't even have an ISP because I'm beaming a connection to my neighbor." Talk about a Technology Connection. 😆

Scott Kemp

Starlink?

Mike Bird

It happens!

The Legacy

See, things still haven't changed here one bit. Technically I don't even have an ISP because I'm beaming a connection to my neighbor. And that's because the ISP is out of ports. So the issue right now is that the trees have leaves, and it started raining. My fallback hotspot isn't working right now, I think due to network congestion.

Technology Connections

What isp do you have so I can make sure to never get it?

Christian Elzey

Never - the refrigeration cycle is absolutely not something Alec would even consider covering. Don’t be silly!

Aaron Carson

Ahhh crap. Sorry to hear it pal <3

Aaron Carson

I learned decades ago from dealing with Microsoft software: Save early and save often. :-(

No worries at all! I appreciate all the work abd time you put into your videos! One question though, when are you going to explain the refrigeration cycle?
