Gettin' Flippy!

Happy Friday! It's time for a new video.

Remember how I said that this was a hectic time and that I wouldn't be able to focus on making videos for a bit? Well, here's the first "this'll be quick and easy" idea that I started working on... more than a week ago. I really just can't help myself, can I?

https://youtu.be/ZArBfxaPzD8

The silly is definitely dialed up in this one. I tend to do that when the subject is simpler, and I know that many, many people have covered these clocks. But I wanted to focus on the fact that they're really not "special", they're just very clever! My favorite kind of thing.

I'll be working on captions as soon as I post this here, so it should just be an hour or two and they'll be up.

Oh, and I have good news! The hecticness is officially over (as of Wednesday) and now I want to catch up on all those projects I've started but haven't followed through on. Lanterns, anyone?

This video made me think of the old alarm clock in my grandad's bathroom, way back in the day. I miss that man. Thank you!

Fun video. We have one of those flip clocks in our living room as we love the retro look. Never realized how much clever complexity is built into its seeming simplicity!

Bill Bates

Just saw this 3D printer flip clock with weather. Neat! https://www.reddit.com/r/functionalprint/comments/mtq0k8/_/

For your Groundhog Day woes: why not think that there is a chance it's actually sync'd to 6am (it would be rare, but the day is already special).. and then, from there on, it's the same day, so the same randomly sync'd events happen the same (until changed by him). then, seeing that same alarm kick the same way, each morning, only hits home how equal the day is...? hope that helps, you crack me up.

Mark Jobes

Now I need a video about mechanical 7-segments displays.

Instead of being flipped off by these clocks, we get flipped on!

Stephen Gillie

Good bet that some acetone will take that fake Victrola logo off without marring the metal.

Matt Whitlock

This video needs to be subtitled, "The Time Alec Finally Cracks"

Tnarg42

Nixie tube flip clocks?

Marcel de Jong

I have both that terrible box clock and the Dcell flip clock. (And a great sounding National branded woodgrain clock radio) Does your Dcell flip clock extend up on a chunky telescopic antenna as well?? My terrible box clock had a dumb design error with poorly moulded mechanical plastic parts that would stick and stop it working, I filed it down and used a deburring tool in 2013 and it works to this day (but yes not recommended)

A somewhat related video from Tom Scott: https://youtu.be/bij-JjzCa7o

Glad you've managed to deliver a final, clear explanation of latent heat and the refrigeration cycle!

Clayton Grey

The 60hz clock is very tightly maintained. - From the Texas outage, power stations disconnect when they're off by a few percent. - From console speedrunning, PAL versions of games run at 50hz, or in slight slow motion. Leaderboards have been made to compensate for this. - TVs and other appliances use this clock to synchronize. - Some solar systems can't operate without main power providing the clock signal, so they aren't able to interfere with it, and thus don't work in power outages.

Stephen Gillie

Your question starting at 0:31 -- you might say that their TIME has passed.

Don Eitner

Oh god yes, please do a video on Solari boards. I'd pay a substantial amount of money (though perhaps not as much as those cloud based ones cost) to have one just to hear the sweet shuck-shuck-shuck sound of flipping flaps in my very own living room.

TwoFiftyFare

Ground hog day was SUPPOSED to be the exact SAME day over and over.

After watching the intro, I can confirm that we GOTTA get you out of the house.

No wander Marty was late meeting Doc in Back to the Future.

Brett Walton

If you really want to make a video about the more complicated split flap departure board displays, I can totally put you in contact with them. They're awesome guys.

Max Goldberg

That was a hell of a time learning about this subject, I hope to clock more videos of this nature in in the future if time doesnt tick by to quickly.

Honorary Octopus

Thanks for your service 🙂

Floppy Jaloppy

Flippin 'eck! (yes, pun to another YouTuber, whom I think also once reviewed flip clocks ;-)) I almost thought that the clocks were going on like the CFLs a few videos ago :-P

MrHammond

I wondered how many takes it took to do the refrigeration cycle bit with a straight face. :-)

Brad Wilmot

Awesome, always wondered how they worked. Except now I want one.

I just started working, but I'll definitely watch this as soon as I have TIME.

Michael Dunn

I got of those clock radios for my 10th birthday. I was as thrilled as a 10 year old kid would be today getting his own iPhone.

Professor Kroog

Did not see that, so nope!

Technology Connections

I was wondering if you abandoned the idea of the Aladdin lamp and the other lanterns, didn't know that you were just waiting for the right time to do it. Teletext, your day is coming, dont worry!

Guy Mendes

I wonder if the flip-clock-animation vide that adam savage recently released inspired this video. That one actually made me finally research how those things actually work (after wondering about it since childhood)

SkaveRat

I have that same model, it satisfyingly flipped over to 5:00pm right at the end of me watching this video, I'd never noticed the way the hour card is held back by the minutes side at the end of the hour before.

Paul Sharp

Finally! I'm obsessed with flip clocks. I have a personal connection with a company in Philadelphia that builds split flap displays for commercial use (bar menus, etc) and I am absolutely obsessed with them. I own like 5 or 6 flip clocks.

Max Goldberg

I was so sad when I realized it changed to 7:59 off camera.
