It's a million subs special!

Well, kind of anyway :)

In this video I go through everything that's in the set and tell you a little something about it. I also explain what the deal is with the TVs, which most of you know but hasn't ever been explained to the wider public. Time for that to be unveiled!

https://youtu.be/plbB42EUIUU

As always, thank you for your tremendous support! Especially through a year like last one. Eugh.

And a quick note! The mass-message I sent out has completely ruined my Patreon messaging inbox. Apparently that function isn't really separated from the ordinary messages I send and receive. I had some unread messages that are now gone, so if anyone sent a message and I haven't replied you might want to re-send it. I'm gonna do my best to find them via email, but it's really screwed up so I won't be bothered if you poke me :)

Oh, and this will be going live tomorrow (which is technically today, for me anyway). As soon as I do captions and throw a thumbnail together, that is

It's a million subs special!

I would totally be willing to volunteer my time to help build videos and graphics for your set backdrop TV's!

Jurassic_Jacob

Congratulations on making it so far on youtube! The TV reveal was impressive too!

I just watched your videos about VHS/Betamax and RCA disc format wars, etc. It got me thinking about my dad, an electrical engineer, who worked for RCA, Ampex, IBM, Xerox, and just about everyone else in the 60s and 70s. (He changed jobs a lot!) I recall his dinner table rants about the stupidity of management vividly - they were not pleasant. His concerns were in the field of computer memory. Are you planning a show about the memory wars, tube, drum, magnetic core, plated wire, solid state, etc?

I will admit, the TV reveal blew my mind! I always thought it was some sort of colored acrylic with a light source behind the whole rig. The TVs is way more clever and flexible.

I don't know if you purposely are waiting to replace that radio knob or if you just haven't had the time to bother with it but here's one result of a quick google image search for "Philco radio knob". http://renovatedradios.com/product.php?product=214

Benjamin Maslow (BEM684)

thanks for being authentic

Thanks for being weird. And informative and entertaining.

Arthur Robillard

Congrats on the 1M subs. I enjoyed seeing the secret of the illuminated walls and the state of the shelves, it made me feel better about my own unfinished / delayed projects. Thanks so much for sharing with us.

Blake Partridge

Congratulations on this milestone! I've been watching your channel for a long time, but I subscribed after I saw the RCA CED series. You mean someone other than my family knows what the heck these things are?!?!? Yes, I grew up having one of these hooked to our living room TV. Watch a lot of Peanuts cartoons and The Muppets on it. The video on the color brown changed my whole thought process as a graphic designer, and the dishwasher video made me a Patron.

GirlsCanTechToo

Ha! When you were talking about doing lanterns in an upcoming vid, I actually thought, 'Hmm I wonder if the Teletext vid is still happening or if he abandoned the idea?'. And then you go & call me out for it. 😂 Regarding videos in the background, I do hope you'll keep it really slow. Like, 'occasionally one will change' slow. Something about moving backgrounds messes with my head & I find it distracting.

Swedish "inspired" most likely!

Anton

Congrats on hitting 1M subs. You were my source of late night entertainment and geekery. Especially love your light meter video since I do film photography as well.

Let’s be honest, most of us are here because you’re our kind of weirdo :) Congrats on the milestone :)

Chris Crowther

Congratulations on hitting such a milestone!!! As a fan of the channel (and KALLAX shelves), this video finally pushed me to hit that Patreon button! The videos are fantastic, your presentation is top notch, and your puns are terrible in the best possible way. Keep up the great work!

Hah. My kids love to see their first names in credits of movies. I can show them now that my whole name is in the credits of a YouTube video. Great video, BTW. ::) My favorite is still the one on PCM analog to digital sound conversion. Maybe in some video, you can let us know which of your videos has had the most views.

Thank you for my name's 0.7 seconds of YouTube fame, Alec. Proud to be a supporter. Hope you have a great 2021 (or, as I prefer to say, 2020 can kiss my ass.)

Al Davis

Your humor is the best. I like the "fake Swedish plants" ;) CONGRATS ON 1M SUBS! It's a well deserved achievement.

Insider Chad

Hey Alec, I made some 20 min seamlessly looping videos using your templates in which the colors in each cell change hue at a random speed, and have a gradient applied. Feel free to use them. There are also download links to Dropbox for the videos, and they are very small (130MB and 150MB) Left: https://youtu.be/ezvKJc736VE Right: https://youtu.be/hRe7Mg3iJqg

An awful lot of Matt / Matthew names on that Patreon list. Techmoan has the same, and I asked him what he thought. "Maybe Matthews are more generous than people with other names." he said. Then I realised that "Matthew" was one of the most common names given to baby boys between 1970-80, pretty much THE audience of tech YouTube channels.

Matthew Lawrenson

Congratulations! Love your channel. And that TV idea behind your set is SO COOL. !!

You will never stop being the highlight of my week when you release. Thank you again

Nuki Chau

Well, I've been a YouTube subscriber for a moment now, but I just joined this journey as a Twitter follower and Patreon member. That's absolutely invaluable content you're creating and thus you deserve all the support! Content that allows us all, curious about the history of all sorts of tech, to better understand everything. I learned a lot so far, and will still do from your videos for years to come I hope! Congratulations!

Slay3rOne

for the something to do with the display, might I recommend the set for the "Stop Making Sense" version of "Making Flippy Floppy" by talking Heads https://youtu.be/h-1PXYM135I?t=1904

Brian Miller

Well, it's no polar plunge in a Borat thong but I suppose it will have to do. Seriously though, congratulations! You've well earned it, and THANK YOU!

Kevin Tessner

Congratulations, man. Here's to another million!

Awwwww, thanks for putting up the names of the patrons that pledge the minimum 🥺. Very happy for your milestone, your weird videos and persona are actually VERY educational. Congrats, Alec!

Nice on the Cosmos VHS. One of my most prized possessions is a well-worn first edition of the hardback adaptation of that series, autographed by the late Dr. Sagan himself.

Tony Toon

Congrats on the million subs! It's funny you put out this video about the set. Just the other day I was watching your videos and my 8yo asked if the set behind you was a green screen. She didn't believe me that it wasn't! When she gets home from school I'm going to make her watch this and tell her "I told you so"

David LeBlanc

Congratulations Alec! I wonder how much money you are leaving on the table with those like us who are in the $5 tier because the $10 tier is sold out?

That TV idea is brilliant! I would have never thought that they were TVs behind there!

Honorary Octopus

Congratulations! 2021 gets better and better!

Daniel Welsh

Sorry, I'm vain, I had to skip to the end to see my name. Eeeeeee~ Congratulations on a million, I'll watch the video proper now :p

Honorary Octopus

Congratulations 🍾🎈

Adam Wishneusky

build backlight better

Galen Thurber

There's also a very similarly named engine heater called Calix. Also Swedish I think. ;)

Juhani Saarinen

Ten times more & you'll have 1 billion. MAGAmath

Galen Thurber

Well done and keep up the work!

Jonathan OConnor

I also didn't find myself in there :/

“I thought I was just too weird” There is far more weirdos than one may expect, it why I’m here! Congratulations on 1,000,000!

What, no bloopers or outrageous puns? ;) You deserve thanks too for making all the informative and entertaining videos that have helped keep the rest of us sane in an utterly craptacular 2020.

Jason Wellband

Congrats, Alec! You deserve it. Proud to be a Patreon supporter!

I disappeared from the patreons list in the ending?

Per 'Zapro' Jensen

I'm YouTube famous now! lol. Congrats, Alec. It's truly well-deserved! I'm pretty sure I Patron'd up when your count was MUCH lower - right around when you started moving over to HQ - and I'm so glad to have been around for the ride! Keep the weirdness coming!!

Patrick Bianchi

I don't remember really when I became a patron, or which video got me hooked. But I am glad I am here.

V.E. Griffith

Yay!

Benjamin A.

The pronunciation you're looking for would be (similar to) "KAH-licks". Your bookshelf is named after a small town way above the arctic circle: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalix Greetings from a Swedish meatball. 😃 Edit: Oops. It's actually just slightly below the artic circle. I'm in the south, so what do I know? 😳

Per Hedetun

Congrats! Love your channels, love the content. I'm looking forward to seeing all the videos that will come!

Absurdly weird is way more interesting & relatable. 😊

Aaron Deskin

I figured the lights were some rgb led thing, didn't expect 2 TVs! Appreciate the content, and the behind the scenes video on the set.

Congrats!!! Great idea for a special I realy enjoyed discovering your great set.

\o/ Congratulations! And thank you: I even found my name in the big list :-) Ewen

Ewen McNeill

Even though I knew you used TVs as background, I never really noticed just how much they make a difference until you did a “side-by-side” comparison. It totally makes sense why the connextras videos seem more... dim. Anyway, here’s to more great content in a (hopefully much) better year! Maybe “No Effort November” will actually happen!

Sean Hearrell

Even though you said yesterday that it was an automated process, the first thing I did was skip to the end to check my name was spelt right. (Which, of course, it is.) Now I'm wondering what the most popular first name is for your patrons!

Martin Deutsch

As you open the drawers I can SMELL the inside.
