Bubble Lights!

We're closing out No Effort November with a festive light video that actually, honest to goodness, for real, 100% was a quick and dirty low-effort video. It's a Christmas miracle!

This year I think I won't be doing another coloring experiment - I'm all wiped out from the lava lamp video and would rather just turn that part of my brain off. I'll be doing captions right now and since this video is so short I expect them to be ready within the hour.

If you leave them on long enough will the pressure eventually build up enough so that the liquid stops boiling?

I'd just like to mention that this is a Menards commercial from 1990: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvDl00LBCJM

I came here to let you know that I made a really weird face at the seasonings greetings joke, but then you made me sing the Menards jingle and I need to walk away from my phone now.

Loved the home alone Buzz reference! Lol

Big Clive was trying to replicate these some years back. Its possible the modern ones are using a different and safer chemical, or it could just be R290.

We have one of those lights as a sort of night light, where it plugs directly into an electrical socket and has a switch on it. Not exactly sure where we got it from, though, as I had never seen them before growing up, and didn’t realize they were actually also meant for stringing around trees!

Boiling solvent is so much safer than just hot bulbs. Happy holidays!

Stephen Gillie

Only you would do a video on these. LOL! I have them and have loved them since I was a kid in the 70s.

So I guess you could say you... Save[ed] big money! on those?

Sean Hearrell

My grandma always had those on her tree

BiggieJohn

Very happy for this to be my first video as a new supporter. It means I could snag some on Amazon before the video inevitably makes the price go up. ;) And also I super love Christmas lights, so, thumbs up.

David Glover-Aoki

Yes! My girlfriend and I have been obsessing over bubble lights (very specific I know) all week trying to find a set like her grandmother's she's nostalgic about. And wouldn't you know, the annual holiday light video is on just that! Couldn't have asked for a more opportune video topic or timing and we're psyched to watch it tonight.

Cool lights, never seen them before. Interesting watching Alec repeatedly mention the fire hasard of electric lights on a Christmas tree while I have never actually had that... My family has always used real candles, and still do.

"Menards". I love it when YouTube presenters speak my language.

Jim Smith

We had these when I was a kid in the ’80s. My mom had had them as a kid in the ’50s. Or maybe just seen them on her grandmother’s tree. I remember her telling me that her grandmother had bought them because they resembled the candles(!) that had previously been used.

Very interesting lights. They are kind of neat and are a nice change from the usual just plain bulbs.

Ah it's nice to hear my old "seasonings greetings" gag coming from someone else. Just proves that my bizarre sense of humor is not entirely unique.

Don Eitner

Alec, your challenge for next year's No Effort November is to feature no lighting-related topics for the entire month a la Aging Wheels NEN theme this year to not show videos featuring cars during the entire month of November.

Mark Hesse

Never seen such a thing before, but they are cool, but not that cool that I would immediately think of buying them :-P. Maybe I'm the too-conservative European guy for that ;-). I know the Americans can get a bit crazy (not in a bad way) when Christmas is coming ;-).

MrHammond

It was nice to get up to a really entertaining video today. The first Christmas I remember is my when I was three. (My birthday is Dec.22, I was just 3.) My sister and I lived with our grandparents and they had those bubble lights on their tree. That was 1949. They must have been more on top of things than I thought. Love the lights. Thanks for the memories and the explanation.

Allen Boogaard

Oh fun! I had a single one in night-light form growing up. Thanks for the memories!

Leo Herzog

These are so cool! I'm in the UK and have never seen them before - seems you can only get them imported here from the US :( It used to be the case that people had actual candles on the trees... Doesn't sound like a brilliant idea. Thanks for the excellent video as usual Alec :)
