The Weird World in RGB

Aaaannnnddd here it is!

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYbdx4I7STg

So. Lots of this is probably information you already knew. But, it definitely did all click together a little better in my brain after playing around with these lights. And hopefully, there's something new for you to see, too!

I have spotted the "easter" typo and, well, I'm gonna let that stay. It amuses me.

As I said in my update post, I had hoped that this style of video would be easier to make (since I basically filmed a bunch of stuff and then wrote the script around it) but it was, in fact, much more difficult. I had to re-shoot a few things, as well as re-write a portion of the script as I realized the information was incomplete. And, uh, well actually that's just much more difficult to do in many ways than simply writing it all first, then filming and editing. Living and learning!

I'm gonna probably make that second channel video tomorrow, and release the videos publicly on Wednesday.  If for some reason I can't get the follow-up made tomorrow, I'll push release back.

Very nice! I'm gonna point my students in our Computer Graphics lecture to this video :-)

This video has shown me the light! πŸ™ƒ Now I'm questioning my TV's & PC monitor color accuracy. Or do we as different people really see colour the same way, or is it relative like spelling πŸ€”. This video has really been eye opening... I'll show myself out now.

Something I have been thinking about a lot, but never came to try out, thank you very much for showing this, Alec!

MrHammond

Wow, this is the first time that I really understood the difference between single and full spectrum light. Thanks!

urbanhusky

That was a particularly great video again, thanks!

Kilrah

Second that, they seem to be a nice thing to play with since they've got the 2 whites as well!

Kilrah

Oh no! I feel terrible for making you join Twitter! I did see that, thanks for letting my know that was you!

Putt Putt looked purple to me when you claimed it looked grey. My brain must be faulty, I'll have to go back to the store to get a new one.

I want you to know that I made a whole ass Twitter just to @ you a picture I took under LED 'sodium' lights. ...I think Twitter is annoying but YOU are worth it. Hahaha

Garrett Rabenold

Maybe a follow-up video on why some colors are mixed RGB for lighting or LCDs, and others are CYM(K) for printing. Why are there no RGB printers or CYMK monitors?

Love the video! (and the channel) Tell me about those studio lights... I could use those! regards, Eric www.korenman.com

I'm actually color blind (red/green), and don't have any problems seeing colors when they are close, but say if a car is faaaar away, I can not see the color of it. It just seems dark gray. Light Yellow/Green leds (say in a laser tag scenarios) I have problems quickly identifying as well. That's why I only play on red or blue teams.

I remembered an old Minute Physics video "There is no pink light" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9dqJRyk0YM where he refers to pink as "minus green". That was 2011 and it has always stuck with me.

A really fun artifact of separate RGB light sources is shadows. The lit object looks color accurate, however there are 3 shadows produced, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow.

I was watching the video with Android's Night Light enabled. The part with the plush toy car was very confusing.

Nicely done Mr. TC, but you missed the opportunity to utter "illuminant metameric failure." Thanks for existing.

I miss the sportcoat

First off, damn you for having that monochrome cube in that shot. My brain did not appreciate that. Secondly, I had to double check that you didn't say "that makes PURPLE sense" instead of "perfect sense" when talking about the car @17:32. And yes this video did help me understand the violet phenomenon better. I wonder what in our evolutionary history caused that, like maybe we were eating purple berries we thought were green and it killed them off, except for the weird mutants who could figure out that it wasn't green at all. Those pesky X-Men... Great content as usual.

This helps explain why LED street lights just seem odd. They’re making my eyes see more colors at night than they’re used to. PS. The text on screen right before the boat footage says β€œeaster”

Well now, this video is just the RGBee’s Knees. HAAAAAHHH! (I’ll go sit in the corner of shameβ„’ now)
