The first update on the E-ink tablet situation

I almost forgot about this... I got carried away doing some chores and forgot this was uploading. Somehow it's still not processed past 360p, so this doesn't look great right now, but hopefully it looks better soon.

Once it's at 1080p or better, I'll make this public.

Hi Alec, just curious if you have done any more research on this. I would hope that the technology has improved a bit over the last 18 months or so.

I just head about the Kingrow K1 e-ink smart phone, the Indigogo video is a little hyperbolic but I thought you might be interested in in Alec https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/kingrow-k1-a-smartphone-for-optimized-eye-health--2#/

I guess it’s an either-you-see-it,-or-you-don’t type of deal. Like with these Rainbow-Projectors. If you have an OLED phone you can rapidly shake it sideways. When you lower the brightness, the pattern will change from lines, to dashes, to dots.

I hadn't heard about this. My reading suggests this is the case in many but by no means all oled displays. Likely it is nigh impossible to research which ones though. I'd hazard to guess pwm pixel flicker is nothing compared to backlight flicker and bleed through, but I'm not an expert in these things.

This is all well and good, but I must ask... why do you have 45 cents on your table? :)

I know the brightness and blue light from monitors was giving you headaches, but have you continued to experience them with the e-ink display? The flickering and slow response seems like it would start causing some pain after a while. I would love to see a video on headsets, like the AfterShokz you have sitting on the table. I’ve tried so many different types over the years, but I’ve never had a single issue with my AS Airs.

OLEDs are not a good solution for many. Lower brightness is realized by turning the Pixels off and on. In low brightnesses this can result in a visible flicker.

We could do better than that in OS2, 25 years ago !

in some computers there was a keyboard buffer that remember but was slow to put out. i had to wait to that buffer to output all keys before i typet again.. cos it remember all typos

I don't if this feature is main stream Android, I would be interested to learn if grayscale mode (on my pixel 3) would offer the same effects. Side note: Airport arrival and departure boards could probably really benefit from e ink! Can you imagine the power draw reduction of those big displays! Way to reduce the carbon footprint! Just a million dollar thought! P.S. Billboards too!

It isn't financially realistic for everyone, but there's 15 inch oled convertible laptops on the market, and you can get them used on ebay in the $800 range. Oled displays in dark/night mode are pretty gentle on the eyes since they can display almost true black.

I also thought it was "Way calm". Wow. I had to do some research - of course watching Wacom's YT videos. I found one reference to it - like the lovechild of the words "walk" and "welcome". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bCN2SgGnIo
