I bought an actual teleprompter thingy! My home-made thing was getting far too annoying and soon I'll be able to leave this set up in a corner without constantly tearing it down all the time! And IT IS SO MUCH BETTER!
Real teleprompters use a special glass (kind of like one-way mirror glass) which reflects things just so much better. I think it's called beam-splitting glass if I'm not mistaken. I had no idea it's this much better! The image on the screen is like 5 times brighter and this is so much clearer!
And, as a bonus, whenever my terrible teleprompter tablet solution gives up the ghost, this will hold much larger tablets.
Anywho, working on editing now! I hope to have this video ready for your eyes in a couple of days!
Nice! I've always wondered if beam splitter glass was worth it. I just use regular photo frame glass (diy teleprompter), the beam splitter ones are soooooo pricey!

Look closely at the the reflected image from the tablet and you'll see the camera's lens behind it. With this setup, I'm reading the words, but looking pretty much directly at the camera. It's a much less noticeable this way that I'm (or anyone else reading from a prompter) am reading something.
Also, the tablet looks smaller mainly because of perspective. I simply used my phone for this, and with the slight wide-angle lens, closer objects appear much larger

I am genuinely curious, how is the mirror an improvement over just mounting the tablet upright to be read? It almost looks like the tablet looks even smaller through the angle of the mirror.

Having used Colin Grimshaw's (above) studio often, I can testify to that. :-) That's a nice piece of kit, Alec.

Hey Alec: Getting quite "professional" here. Congrats. I'm sure it will surely aid in ever better videos coming our way! Keep up the good work. VGC

I see you're using a Windows tablet with it...it seems like a good use for my 2012 Microsoft Surface

Well worth the investment. I bought a genuine promoter from the UK manufacturer Autocue for my TV studio and it made a great difference. Reading from Autocue is also better when you, yourself, have actually written the words running up the screen. Running a promoter for someone else to read is a little more tricky!

Teleprompters would also make for a good future video topic.

Awesome! Back in the day (mid-late1980’s) I worked with a guy who rented a TelePromTer to the studios. That’s how I met him. It was powered then by, are you sitting, an Atari 800. The paddle controller was the scrolling control. It was awesome and at the time the most advanced device because it was portable and Atari graphics scrolled smoother than an Apple //.

Funny. I bought the exact same one and just got it yesterday. The arm is a little too short. I can get a regular iPad in but I have to unscrew it to get my old Pixel X in. Even if I were to screw with the arm, the yoke makes it impossible to get the 12.9 iPad in even though the glass is big enough to use it.

That looks dead professional! - I don't know whether this is what you're hinting at; but I'd love to see a video about the history and uses of teleprompters, and Autocues. "You know, whatever is written on the teleprompter, he'll read out...!"

That looks cool and I bet it'll work well for you. I wouldn't be able to take orders from some snooty, know-it-all device that was hired after me. I'd spend half of the time arguing with it, but you're more professional than I.

^^^ ditto ^^^ :-) I've never understood how the light from the tablet can bounce off the angled glass to reach your eyes, yet the light coming off you can head straight through the angled glass to reach the camera!
