The Story of the Disc in the SD Logo

The silliness got dialed up a bit for this one. Just a bit. You may recall that I mentioned this before in my video on DVD and how it pretty much ended Laserdisc, and now, here it is!

This is more of a "trivia" video, and I'm testing the waters on this sort of thing a bit. I keep saying I need to make some simpler videos, and now that Headquarters is nearing completion, that's extra true as I work through the move.

Speaking of Headquarters, I have another update video for you coming soon (likely tomorrow)

Captions are on the way as always, but please feel free to enjoy it now! I will be making it public on Monday morning.

Just found this tidbit: "Is [the logo] required? No. The logo is not required. And it has nothing to do with copyright issues. It is only advised if you want your DVD to appear ‘legitimate’ and of high standards." " https://blog.unifiedmanufacturing.com/dvd-logo/

I love the production value of this stuff, I am always laughing as I am learning with this channel. Its just amazing. I am so happy I found this.

Now, you see, I didn't know I could use keys to go backward and forwards frame by frame, so I will try that in future. It won't work on my 4k TV though. :-) I guess I'm old fashioned and I have to rethink my attitude to production and editing in the YouTube era.I still tend to think in broadcast standard. By the way, back in the 90s, I made a series on the technology of the time, I'm putting some online. I'll send you a link, clips from some of the interviews etc. might be of use to you - they are tech history now. :)

I did make up pitchfork of knowledge! That's been a long-time observation of mine, particularly when the USB logo was featured more prominently on stuff. Re: Your thoughts on editing--I appreciate your concern here but both actions are deliberate. We seem to have a different appreciation for humor in editing, which I can understand given your past experience :) If there's a caption that I actually need to be read, I do make sure it's on screen for a reasonable amount of time. The ones I flash right before a cut are meant to be a sort of easter egg for the dedicated viewers. (as a hint: use K to pause, and the < and > keys advance frame by frame. If you're watching on mobile you're out of luck, though) If I messed that up this time 'round it was unintentional. I actually wanted the cut-off at 2:26 to be even more abrupt, but ending the previous sentence with "up" left me in a tight spot. I wanted it to be a cut mid-word, but the "up" is just too short.

The CD loudness war may also be worth covering. I remember a class topic in college around 18 years ago on records vs CDs and which sound better. I was surprised at several students being convinced records sound better, ... until just a few weeks ago when I bought a record player to sample my parents collection. Some 45s indeed sound noticeably punchier than the CD release (where I have both), which got me wondering what's going on. It didn't take long for me to find out that the records cannot handle heavily compressed dynamics (due to groove pitch, RIAA equalisation, etc.), so when music is mastered for vinyl, it does not get the same heavy dynamic compression to make the music as loud as possible. Unsurprisingly, if I record the 45 single, the recording sounds just as good, but obviously not as loud as the CD release, easily solved with the volume knob... :)

Apparently, SD has been used as a music format.... IN KOREA!!!!!!! Techmoan did a video on it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbGDPFVjvVU LOVED your "sillyness"!!!

Jason Wellband

In Digital Cinema you have MasterImage 3D, Dolby 3D, Xpand3D and Real3D. Yet Disney labels their stuff "Disney Digital 3D" which is not a thing at all.

Jason McMillon

Another really interesting video Alec. Along with others, I hadn't even noticed there was a disk in the SD logo! Might I make a couple of observations about the editing? If you're going to flash captions or overlay text, leave it on long enough to be read. I get a bit tired of pausing, going back and then trying to get YouTube to pause on one of the five frames your caption occupies to read what is says. Also, when editing and joining two sections, (2' 26") always leave a breath in. "Pitchfork of knowledge"? Did you make that up? LOL! :-)

Speaking of money, every time I, in Denmark, buys an SD card to record gone video or take pictures, I also pay a fee to the music industry because I technically can copy their music into the card. True for any storage media in Denmark.

I always thought that those logos were for nothing but marketing, such as: "Hey kids--look here! This stereo ain't your same old record player or tape deck--it uses state of the art COMPACT DISC!" It seemed odd as time went on and the novelty had worn off that the logo was still being used and the typeface itself seemed outdated. All this time there was actually a practical (and $$$) reason for it.

Mark Hesse

Now I know. the reason why that D looks like a disc. I also observed this earlier, at the same time when I noticed that the "CD" in Sega CD's logo looks like a disc. Never again will we hear a format that has "super" on its name.

These videos just keep getting better and better. Thank you so much!

The slightly surly expression during the VHS tape swap scene made me get coffee in my sinuses. You're videos go from strength to strength.

Wim

Quick technical note -- you may not want to mount your lav mic on one side of your lapel if you're going to be turning your head to the other side. The differences in sound quality when you do so are noticeable. There are ways to fix a lav mic under your shirt, centered, without it making a rustling noise; see many youtube videos on the subject.

Jim Leonard

That was an absolute delight! Really love your dry comedy, it's a great way to deliver tidbits like these. I'm also very curious about Disney's logo -- I'd noticed that one quite some time ago, too, and wondered much the same as you. (I seem to remember the VO on their trailers for upcoming home releases saying "Coming soon to video and Disney DVD..." along with that logo.)

Phia Westfall

If you looking into Solid State memory format's, are you planning to look into the variety of Solid State storage, as there is plethora of them, but to be honest the only surviving ones today are the SD card which is now done and USB storage, I guess SD being around today is probably the result of its easy use a boot device on smaller computers etc.

Paul Fisher

I never really spent a second thinking about why there was a disc on the SD-Card. The best videos are the unknown unknowns, the things I didn't know I that I didn't know. The Compact Disc logo is retro now, but in many ways it has been for a very long time. It's not just that it's old, it's also that it's using a font style which was out of date almost immediate, by the mid 1980's. Take a look at late 1970's and earlier 1980's you'll see more rounded fonts. Check out the fonts on the boxes for the Atari VCS or Intellivision vs. the Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo. Heck, as 11-13 year old at the end of the 1980s, I remember thinking that the logo looked old. Anyway, keep up good work, generic compliment.

"The pitchfork of knowledge" ^_^

So really, in a way, the true meaning of SD is Super-Density!

Bill Basch

This is practically comedy. You've brightened my day.

I already knew that SD meant Secure Digital. Never knew who it was that created the logo.

Blackspots

Huh... Learn something new every day. I thought SD stood for SanDisk. I just assumed that SanDisk owned the patent on the technology and licensed it to all the other manufacturers. I never bothered to look it up.

Laurence MacNeill

Yeah probably. Slow processing seems to be a thing recently. It's uploaded in 4K so... it will get much better soon!

Technology Connections

I'm guessing the video is still processing. Its only available at 360p at the moment.
