Out-of-Context Sneak Peek

This is a rough edit of a sequence that's appearing in my upcoming video. It will probably be only about 6 minutes long, but that means it will be out pretty soon! In fact, depending on how the evening goes, I might even have it done tonight. Certainly by tomorrow for public release Friday.

If you know what this is about, you probably follow me on Twitter. If you don't, see if you can guess!

Great idea, DJI Osmo II as a recommendation!

I haven't read the musings on Twitter, but you may have just inspired a new hack: the elevator organ! Logistics problems abound, but is it possible? Think about that for a while.

I hope that this will turn in a long web series. However, to avoid motion sickness, I recommend to use a tripod or a gimbal.

Based on tweets I'll say that this is to do with the auditory cues that elevators make to indicate to visually impaired people a) when an elevator has arrived, and b) whether it's going up or down. 2 beeps for down, and I think just a single beep for up.

Don't tell me you're installing an elevator at the new HQ....

We're goin' down, down, in an earlier round, but sugar we're goin' down swingin'

Elevators! They have been one of my favorite works of engineering since my very early days. Looking forward!

This footage is a real downer. (I'll see myself out; no need to pelt me with tomatoes on the way... ;))

Yes elevators! One of my favorite elevators is one in an office tower in my city, it's got great floor announcements https://youtu.be/ADn3URcv0DI

I guess I've been very unlucky then :). Thanks for the answer, BTW. That one's been bugging me for years.

this looks like b-roll footage for an indie song about elevators

MrSonicOSG

The ones at the local mall here in Anchorage do work. It’s not that every elevator has them disabled, just that a good number of them.

was supposed to be an equally cryptic reply ( I think i know what you're on about ) looks like i failed ha ha - cheers for reply

There will be some in other places. This is an onslaught of examples.

Technology Connections

without an equivalent number of "Up" samples can we really tell??

Wow, some cool stuff is going down! Tune in to the next exciting episode to find out what :-) Ewen

I can answer that! The door has to stay open for at least 3 seconds to meet ADA guidelines (I think it's 3 seconds, but I'm not sure). In many elevators, the buttons are disabled to ensure this can't be overridden. But, they have to still be there because in firefighter's operation, the door control is manual (you actually have to hold it until the door is completely open) so that they can quickly close it if they find themselves face to face with flames. Independent service mode often requires holding the close button down until the door has closed before it will move.

Technology Connections

And why, only in the USA, does the "doors close" button do nothing useful? It will close in it's own good time...

One of the reasons that I am a patron, is that you always do videos on crazy shit that only a geek can appreciate, like the science of Christmas lights or GFCI's or telephone ringtones or streetlights, or whatever! - It's crucial that we never know what to expect next! - This way, you don't really have any youtube competition, because no one else ventures into the messed up places where your brain goes - lol

Hmmmmm........not going to give up! Perhaps it's a video showing the many elevator rides taken by the INVISIBLE MAN ????? Can't wait to see just what this is. How am I going to sleep tonight?

Vincent G. Calvacca

You're producing "The Lift 2: The Hellevator Strikes Back!" ?

My guess is a video about elevators (must just be the basics if it's 6 minutes) and this is a segment illustrating that elevators chime twice when going down.

No, it's just whatever ambient noise was in this. I'll check to see if there's any sort of high pitched noise present. Might just kill everything above 15 kHz.

Technology Connections

FYI - while I watching this my wife started complaining about a painful high pitch squeal sound that could only be coming from this video. She wears hearing aids which may have been boosting some frequency. I didn't hear it at all but then I know i have high frequency hearing loss; I was able to hear the elevator beeps just fine though. Did you have some other sound source in the video?

R Brooks

No idea, but every car was going down.
