Just throwing this out there...
Added 2018-08-16 22:12:10 +0000 UTCIn my last behind the scenes video, I had forgotten to turn off monetization at first. For stuff that only Patrons can see, I try to turn off ads since there's no reason to keep them on there.
That said, when I upload a video for general consumption (that sounds weird but it will have to do), I leave monetization on because I want to be sure that the algorithm doesn't catch it.
It seems that lately the algorithm has indeed been improving. It's been a long time since any of my videos have been flagged, and though my channel is what you might call "innocent" in regards to what the algorithm might be looking for, it is encouraging to see that it is improving. Lots of people like to moan about all the terrible things happening at YouTube, but they have extremely complex problems to solve so I tend to give them some slack.
Anyway, I wish I could turn ads off for the videos when you have exclusive access to them, but I fear this would potentially prevent me from seeing the monetization status change if it happens. I'm too paranoid to do it any other way, so thanks for being understanding.
Oh and that announcement I said I was going to make? It's still happening, but circumstances have changed somewhat. There are now something like 70 million potential avenues and I'll probably just tell you of one that for sure isn't happening but which is objectively the coolest, I think. I had a rather lofty dream that practical considerations have steered me far away from. That will be a video at some point. But I will tease that, with the generous support you all have pledged, I'm dipping my toes into the beginning of a very preliminary exploratory phase in a potential search for possible options for a dedicated filming space, perhaps. How's that for commitment?

Same for me (it's just Germany in my case).

2018-08-17 05:25:10 +0000 UTCTrue patrons don't mind the ads -- in fact, as you're finding, true patrons have YouTube Premium (as I've had since it existed). IMO you should keep monetization on for everything, as not having it on in the first 24 hours of posting a video can wipe out 80% of the money you'd make from YT advertising.

2018-08-17 03:07:04 +0000 UTCI don't really care. I signed up for Youtube Premium the instant it became available in Canada. I just consider it adblock absolution as I haven't seen an ad in years!

2018-08-17 00:57:56 +0000 UTCBefore I signed up to YouTube Premium, I noticed that YouTube videos on Patreon channels never displayed ads (neither video preroll nor pop-up), whereas if I watched the same video directly on YouTube, it played a preroll ad. So before YouTube Premium came to Ireland (Red was never available here), I did a $1 Patreon pledge to the main channels I watch as it let me watch them ad-free as well as the other Pareon benefits. For me, YouTube Premium is indeed great for multiple reasons - I have a prepaid mobile SIM that I must top-up by €20 every 4 weeks, which gives me unlimited data. With that credit, I pay €12/month via carrier billing for YouTube Premium. This gives me Google Music for my hour drive to and from work each day and data consumption is not an isssue as I've unlimited data, which also covers my other usage such as WhatsApp. Indeed YouTube Premium gives me ad-free playback on my PC and mobile and supports the creators.

2018-08-16 23:04:42 +0000 UTCIf I'm able to move on this, the set will be going to the space. I really like it, but what's motivating me to move it is simply that making a video takes up all of my living space. Lights are in the living room, the set is in the dining room, and combined it's the only space large enough to use. I'd like to be able to have a place that everything stays set up and out of my way, with the potential to create more filming areas. It's wearing on me more than I thought it would to have my work space spread throughout my home. Essentially I never planned on making this my job, so my house-hunting did not have any requirement for a work/studio space. I'm just limited in what I can do in many ways and am looking to increase potential. If that makes sense. But we're still in early phases. There are a number of things I could do each with vast pros and cons.

2018-08-16 23:03:18 +0000 UTCI can't, as a viewer, see a fault in your work nor the presentation of it. I do like your current "face-to-face" filming space, as a background. I always find little things back there that make me happy. I guess I have similar interests in such objects. I love your content. I love your concise presentation. Perfect execution on a topic. I don't know if these notions help but I figured I would state 'em.

2018-08-16 22:48:47 +0000 UTCAs a user of ad-blocking software on every computer since 2002 and every phone I have owned since 2010, I just have one question: "What are these ad thingies you speak of, sir?"

2018-08-16 22:44:07 +0000 UTCDedicated filming space? That's quite a shocker. I'm so glad to see your channel is doing so well!

2018-08-16 22:42:10 +0000 UTCYouTube Red (now Premium, but the whole transition is the sort of mindnumbingly dumb thing that Google continuously does) is definitely significant. For the month of August, 26% of my revenue is coming from Red subscribers. The revenue-per-view with Red and non-red views is night and day, so if you enjoy the product rest assured it does positively impact creators. Plus, if you've been a member long enough, you should have access to Google Play music (soon to be YT music, but that's a whole other mess) and are grandfathered in at the $10/month price for some unknown length of time. I've found that alone to be worth the monthly fee, with ad-free YouTube as a nice bonus. It does make me curious where each part of my $10 goes each month, but overall it must be a significant chunk going to creators based on my numbers. Plus, if some goes to music creators when I listen to GPlay, I think that's a good thing!

2018-08-16 22:27:42 +0000 UTCThanks for giving this update. Side question: as a creator, are you getting anything from Youtube red subscribers? Can you differentiate revenue from Red subscribers vs. regular population? Basically, from your point of view, should I keep paying for Red or should I revert back to uBlock?

2018-08-16 22:21:05 +0000 UTCNot worried about it man. I'm more comfortable knowing you're getting paid for the work you're doing anyway!
