Behind the Scenes! A look at the making of my latest video

Making something like this has been long overdue.  Hopefully you find it enjoyable--fair warning, it's on the longer side!

Behind the Scenes! A look at the making of my latest video

I think your editing place is not very healthy for your wrists. Useful space on the table is small and your elbows are hanging in the air. It might lead to carpal tunnel syndrome or something similar in the future.

Pavlo Pravdiukov

It's a fantastic piece of kit, but fair warning--it's ridiculously huge! You need to be OK with moving your head and eyes around a lot. But I find that downside is a small price to pay for luxurious video editing. Plus, it's fairly color-accurate, too!

I currently do not have a basement at my disposal, sadly. I hope to fix that one day. As far as the power the set consumes, the lights are probably something like 100 watts. The spots from Ikea use only one watt each, and their power supplies are super efficient. So although there are 24 of them in total, it's probably less than 30 watts. The laval lamps are each 15, and the LED tape light is maybe 20 watts. Then the filament bulbs are run at a very low intensity so they're probably no more than 20 watts as well. So without the TVs, it's not much of a load. And I would wager the TVs use less than 100 watts each. Funny enough I do have a Kill-A-Watt, but I have *no idea* where it is! It's been MIA for some months now. I figure my mom and dad might have it but I can't recall bringing it to them, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Your name check is well deserved! I hesitated because I have another patron named Stephen and I get the two of you confused in my head a lot. Thankfully I got it right and didn't need to cut it!

Clever use of your available space. I would have never guessed that was you dining room, rather I thought you had a secret underground hideout.... I would be interested in knowing how many watts are going through that main power strip. Do you have a Kill-a-watt?

Tim Skloss

Awesome video sir! I do have to admit that I now have monitor envy after seeing that. Perhaps time for an upgrade.

I love the BTS look at your process! It's always so fun to get this kind of peek behind the curtain. Add me to the "never imagined you used TVs behind the shelves" camp, too.

That was very interesting and actually much what I expected, Alec. Yes, making video can be hard work. Oh - and thanks for the name check as well - I had noticed the difference in the lighting! :-)

I also thought it was a greenscreen.. admittedly didn't think too hard about it though. That masking process looks painful though. I would go crazy and make a custom app that rotates photos about the panels without any hand editing. Thanks for the tour!

Thanks for the BTS view of how the videos are made. I hadn’t guessed you were doing literal “rear projection” behind you — I’d implicitly assumed it was green/blue screen. It’s also interesting that you’re doing dual system audio/video — recording them separately and syncing later. I’d assumed your lapel mic was wireless back to the camera. Definitely a fun tour! Ewen

Your “hello everyone” at the beginning reminded me of uxwbill. Coincidence? I think not! LOL. Fun tour, thanks.
