Set reveal! (mostly)

If you follow me on Twitter,

You'll have seen some cryptic tweets regarding this idea.  Well, this is how it came together.  I think it's super awesome!  How about you?

why dont use a rasberry pie to drive them you can preload them with stuff an have a slide control remote things to move between them

I think that's a brilliant use of your income from Patreon, Alec! :-) May I suggest the addition of some top light, (also known as hair light) just to separate your hair and shoulders from the black in the background. Your set is brilliant, it's colourful and relatively dark, which is fine, so you need "outlining" against it. (Google three point lighting.)

I do a lot of development with Raspberry Pi and just got a Pi Zero W - it's an amazing achievement but very slow, only 32-bit ARM 6 - if you're going to use a RPi, the new 3B+ is alot faster. I'd still recommend a Core i5 NUC - 4 times the price but orders of magnitude faster and much better at multi-tasking. Pi is better for learning and IoT (and Industrial control, which is what we do with them)..

it looks really really good!!

Question for you: with VLC can you stream similar to chromecast? My reasoning for using the Chromecasts is that most of the screen is obscured, so interacting with a desktop environment is nigh impossible. It's also very simple from the perspective of wiring, since the Chromecasts are powered by the USB port of the television. If I used a mini-PC, I would fear that every time it booted up, I need to use a third display to actually interact with.

I really like these ideas, but I am not that technically savvy! My biggest concern with using a PC to drive the screens directly is that with the shelves and (what will be other props) in front of them, it's near impossible to interact with them. With the Chromecasts and a pre-made videos, I can control them with a separate device and the obscured screen isn't an issue. I've made a template in Premier for looping stuff together and it seems to work pretty well so far.

Technology Connections

My reasoning for using Chromecasts was that they are completely wireless and powered by the TV. If I used a PC, I'd need a third screen to actually see what I was doing because the majority of the screen is obscured. I think the easiest thing to do is just create a template in Premiere (which I sort of have) and pre-render video, or just throw up stills if needed. The only real difficulty I foresee with the chromecasts is synchronizing the two if I needed that.

It's crazy... so crazy it just might work! LOL I agree with others, ditch the chromecast idea for a mini-pc either with two outputs or split the output. You could use VLC (on the mini-pc) or similar to stream to that mini-pc.

If you want more control over the screens than a Chromecast provides you should consider some Raspberry Pi Zero W systems. They only cost $5 each (though you need to provide your own USB power supply and SD card) and they run full Linux.

Great idea, and it look awesome!

That looks awesome. Check out the Intel NUC computer - top-end performance in a tiny computer at a very reasonable price - and it'll drive both screens simultaneously with the correct cable. Install Linux Mint - much faster than Windows 10, free and without all the bloatware, spyware & continuous updates Have someone write you an app in Python or JS to stream video, or slides independently to square areas of the screen in a timed loop - you could have a folder for each block containing its content, decision lists to control timing, merge blocks into superblocks etc... Hmmm, the possibilities are interesting..

“I think this is pretty awesome” Well, that’s just because IS IT! Cool idea and some really nice execution :-3

This is going to work so well! One or two of those shelves could even house a couple of ancient Sony Trinitron studio monitors or something even older, for a bit of random analoguosity...

I love it, that’s crazy awesome!!

Taylor Cuzela

Awesome idea!!!! You could possibly run cables to other inputs and eliminate the Chromecast. Perhaps a PC with videos on each screen?

Jason Wellband

I like it. Many many potential things.

Paul Mills

Awesome effect.

Ernie Smith

This is really great. I liked this idea before the screens, but now it's really fantastic.

Easy way to drive both screens at once. Get a used ThinkPad T430. Stupid powerful, stupid cheap ($150-200) on eBay. Add an SSD and it's a more-than-capable daily driver. Most of them have 5GHz WiFi (Intel Advanced-N 6205 is most common). But yeah, this is an awesome idea, just turn the brightness down ;)

Matt Falcon

Cool idea! Looking forward to more great content. Keep up the awesome work.

Love it! Can't wait to see you bounce around between shelves.
