Family stuff

Hello out there, here's a quick story for you...

So this week, the video I'm working on requires 38 different shots of B-roll (or images).  That's a tad overwhelming, but I will get it done!  But in the interim, my assistance has been required at the ol' family abode.  I thought I'd share some of what we were working on together.

This shed is where the charging station lives for their Bolt.  They had the shed put in 3 or 4 years ago, and about a year after that a 100 amp sub-panel was fed from their house to the shed.  Though all they needed were some lights at first (with a motion-activated floodlight on the front of the shed lighting up the path to the house) they went with 100 amps both because I already had the Volt at this point and would be able to plug in close to the driveway, and for the day a pure EV became affordable for them.

Last spring, Costco had a sale on a Siemens EVSE.  Weird sale item for Costco, but a fortuitous deal.  With the service panel already installed, it was easy work to hook up the EVSE.  Out in the country, there's no requirement for hard conduit, so it's just a matter of hooking some nice, beefy 6 gauge shielded wire from the panel to the charger (6 gauge because it's a 50A breaker feeding the EVSE, for the purposes of a possible future upgrade).

Anyway, the charger has been up for the better part of a year, but because of the angle of their shed relative to the driveway, they can't see a damn thing when plugging the car in.  With my dad out of town, I came to visit my mom to help take care of the dogs, and we decided to fix that little problem with a couple of new lights from (you guessed it!) Menards.  These turned out really great, and are the kind where they stay on at a low intensity, but brighten up when they sense motion.  The rustic lantern look suits their house/shed really well, and is interestingly juxtaposed with an EV charging alongside it!

It was nice to do a project for them.  My dad doesn't know we did this yet--my mom always likes to quiz him on if he notices this sort of thing!  So I hope you'll excuse my lack of a video this week.  I might be able to get it up before the week is out (I've got the talking head edited, but little B-roll done).  I'll warn you it's gonna be another long one--24 minutes as it stands!

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this little story.  Thanks for your support everyone, and I'll see you soon!

I really love the idea of the home charging station. No underground storage tank, no driving every couple weeks to fill up. You just come home, plug in, and call it a day.

Very cool! Looks like a nice property. Family first. You reminded me though, I meant to get some of those twinkle lights at Menards, I guess March is a little late, lol
