And now you know why I asked

Thanks to everyone who sent suggestions for this video! This took a surprisingly long time to edit. I thought it would be simple!

Hope you enjoy it!

Here are some useful things for the old phone system https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgoIJ9UDm5E and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkUf3V7XjMU I remember my parents having the old Model 1500 (the one with the # and *), taking it to AT&T to be fixed or replaced.

Your best video to date - your production skills are really evolving - congratulations! Note that Henry Dreyfuss designed more than telephones - his output ranged from streamlined passenger train steam locomotives thru moderne skyscrapers to the Polaroid SX70 camera. Dreyfuss also designed the Western Electric 302 phone.

The original BT 706/746 phones sounded similar, except for the 'ring ring' rather than 'rrrriiiiing' of US telephones. They even had the two-bell layout. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4R2i6qar79g

The British Telecom 706 and 746 phones look almost identical to the Western Electric 500, although they're very different inside. We had a couple of those in our house when I was growing up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4R2i6qar79g

An IT Crowd reference? A man after my own heart! 😁 Great video as always.

Oh man. Right back to my childhood. We had one of those until Alberta telephone broke up. And my grandma had one all the way until the 2000s. And I mean hers was a rotary dial.

Now every time I see a telephone ring in a movie or TV show I will be analysing the tone haha

hey - see what it takes to license this song for the video - you NEED this! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URAqnM1PP5E&t=44

I don't have a Lucy phone, but I do have a Model 354 wall mounted version! That's actually what I used for the clip of the dial switches. I added a Rotatone to that phone many years ago, and it currently is used as the intercom for my building (we're on an old system where the phone jacks are tied to the entry keypad--it rings in a 2-ring pattern similar to the British telephone ring--then you press 6 to let someone in).

Great video. I have to be honest, since I was a projectionist in my early life, I watched a great deal of films in the theatre. I genuinely just chalked the wow and flutter up to the soundhead in the projector... it never occurred to me that it might actually be the original recording.

Jason McMillon

great video, however, I wish you would have also covered the "Lucy" phone, perhaps the most ubiquitous of all time, the Western Electric 302 (which I would have been happy to send you)

Ran to watch this the second I got the notification. Pedantry at its best! ❀️

You went deep down into the rabbit hole on this one - and it was very interesting. Being in the UK, the only place we heard telephones ring like that was on TV.
