Yeah Yang Hyunsuk held nothing back with his feedback on WINNER’s music at that time and even after debut. He told Yoon to stop composing with a guitar and write songs that are more trendy at that time. As you saw he told Mino to “stick with what you’re good at”. But Mino has composed beautiful ballads or slow tempo deep songs. So even though it is indeed Yang Hyunsuk who makes the decisions on what tracks will make the album. I did not like his feedback because how can they grow as artists if they don’t experiment with their music? They have Yoon, Mino, and Taehyun..even Hoony who can compose and write lyrics. All 4 of them are unique in their own way and have their own style in composing music. They all are versatile composers too and don’t have to stick to a similar genre. I honestly felt during this time that the boys were holding back. Fortunately, they were able to show their versatility in 2017. There was always this misconception that WINNER is the contemporary vocal based group when they debuted. But they also have such a bright and fun side too.

Damn just watching their meeting w Mr.Yang made feel anxious lol. I think he had set expectations for WINNER and I don't think he (or even WINNER themselves at this point) truly understood what WINNER could offer. Of course so many things contributed to their early years having drastic up and downs, but I think finding their sound was part of it. I can't imagine the pressure they must have felt releasing Really Really, a complete 180 from their previous releases. It's crazy seeing them now, how they've undeniably created their own sound, earning them titles like the "Kings of Summer" and "WINNERPop".

I'm only halfway through, but yeah YGE is notorious for leaving sooo many songs on the cutting room floor. Obviously they release v high quality albums, but I do think the restrictions on groups, especially newer ones, is too harsh sometimes, and can feel random at times? What you said about Bobby's new track is so true. And same with Hanbin - when he left YGE, the first thing he did was publish all his unreleased/rejected songs on soundcloud. So the control over their creativity must've felt too much at times. I think Bigbang was like the only group that got complete creative freedom over their music and concepts? But yeah, it's interesting to think about, what the right amount of "steering" is.
