Chiming in late here. One piece of evidence I haven't seen anyone mention for the "play in reverse" or "Groundhog Day" interpretations is the digital album cover, which is animated. It shows Slim getting zipped up in a body bag, but then reverses and shows him getting unzipped from the body bag. Zip, unzip, zip, unzip. Point being, Marshall can kill Shady, but Shady will always come back. However, because Eminem has layers, I think there's also a meta thing happening. I think the *real* message of the whole album is what you see 2/3 of the way through the Houdini video: Marshall and Slim Shady morphing into one person. If Slim is dead, it's only because the best parts of him have been incorporated into Marshall. Slim lives on as a part of the combined person.

I was a junior in high school when it came out and I had that bitch on repeat all the way through the summer because there was a lot of other albums that came out that year as well.

Think about the trailer..slims hand came out of the grave. He’s living the events of the album on repeat. That’s why you hear him waking up to an alarm clock throughout and he told Paul he was waking up from his dream but felt like he was still stuck in the dream. It’s like groundhogs day and he keeps trying to kill shady but it keeps starting over and shady is back🤯

In the beginning of the album Em spits on Slim Shady‘s grave, we see this in the teaser video right before the album dropped where Shady’s hand comes out of the grave at the last second. This also explains why we see Slim Shady, kill Eminem in the Tobey video because at that point in the album, he should be dead.

If you’re a schizophrenic if you shoot Shady then Eminem dies. GC1 is great and a classic but it’s all for the sake of the character but GC2 is a deep dive into how we got here and why the character came about. Much more substance.
