[POLL FIXED] Commentary Poll
Added 2023-09-17 02:22:00 +0000 UTCNote: Reposted so the poll allows multiple choice.
So I managed to half-write and then scrap another commentary post (one about the reasons I don't like to talk publicly about author stuff much anymore and also why you should never treat anything authors say about selfpub as gospel). I figure it's time I just do a poll and ask what you want to see in terms of commentary, instead of second-guessing myself constantly.
The idea is to try to do a commentary post a month, given I'll only do a proper book commentary every 2 months or so.
Below are my current ideas:
Trope-talk/What Grinds my Gears: I find some sort of common theme to talk about regarding writing or a broad set of tropes and go into detail about it, like the worldbuilding post. Part of the issue here is finding topics that I feel comfortable talking about at the present, and ideally aren't too related to harem (because I like using examples, but it can be difficult to do so with other authors if I'm being negative).
Author/Writing Topics: This would be stuff related to the actual author/selfpub side of stuff, rather than the drama of it. I usually avoid this, as I feel everyone here is a reader and is more interested in why I'm creating the stories I do, rather than the business of it. But there's always a fair bit of interest in the business/author side in general, and I'd argue that's extremely one-sided in harem (to the extent I'd argue you almost exclusively hear about the McHarem model of authorship). I also worry about the amount of misinfo and confusion that's spread around in general, although it's not really my role to fix it. There's probably only one or two posts here.
Series Retrospectives: These would involve going back over my series and talking about how they've changed, what I think has gone wrong/right, and various learnings. I've always wanted to do these, but kept holding off until I finished a series. At the same time, I'm also wary because talking about aspects of this is difficult without being rather blunt about parts of the genre and its audience.
Lore Stuff: I've create a few series and worlds, and while I talk about some of the inspirations and the lore in the big commentaries, I was often wary of going too in-depth early on. A large part of this was because I cringed away from being too "artsy" as this was the time when everyone and their mother constantly said "pulp is the essence of harem" and actively shit on attempts to do more (and probably still do, but aren't as obnoxious about it). This would be a mixture of explaining lore in the series that doesn't really get a chance to shine, but also some of the inspirations and research that goes into various elements. OTOH, maybe the details in the commentaries are enough.
Also, feel free to suggest ideas if you have them.
Poll allows you to select multiple options. Select the ones you are interested in. I'll use the relative proportion of the vote to gauge interest.
I'm also planning to do some sort of author retrospective as part of my anniversary in November. Just need to work out how I'll do it. It's possible I'll split the negative and positive aspects into separate posts. If you have anything detailed you want me to answer, you can ask.

I put author stuff but love all the available options honestly. Lore is definitely a close second though, especially with HS. All the nuance and depth to that is like crack to me.
