Follow-up Post
Added 2023-04-11 00:23:31 +0000 UTCThis is a just a quick follow-up to the Post About Problems I did on the weekend. I got an overwhelming amount of feedback, and although I responded to a bunch of comments, lots of people probably don't read those.
Also, the Spellblade 5 audio comes out tonight for those interested. Hopefully it doesn't have some horrendous Audible bug and completely tank again.
I made that post as a way to summarize where my thoughts were going. I've been putting off making decisive action about the worsening sales/reads for ages. I needed a triple whammy of two really poorly performing Neural Wraith sequels, where the awful algorithmic tail was too obvious to deny (NW3 has fallen so sharply that it's at levels I've never seen until 5-6 weeks in, and the first two books have seen almost no sales increase; plus none of my other books have increased at all), plus the abysmal NW2 audiobook experience.
In these situations, I usually brainstorm a bunch of ideas, work out what's realistic (including whether I'll do them), and mull them over. Bringing them up here meant I got some useful feedback, as well as helped cement some ideas in my head of what I would and won't do.
So, here's what I'll be doing over the next few months:
- Spellblade 6 and 7 will effectively be one book split in two, around the length of the Neural Wraith books. I expect to start on these once I detach myself from the Neural Wraith books and have reread the series again. This should hopefully kickstart the series after a break. If it works, Demon's Throne will get the same treatment.
- Neural Wraith will be parked until 2024. While I enjoy writing it, I need to give it a rest before I make any decisions about it. My feelings about it are much more positive than I was after DT3 (I strongly disliked how that book turned out, whereas I like NW3), but Amazon is flipping its shit every time I publish a book in the series. It needs room to breathe.
- I'll start on a progression fantasy series shortly. I brainstormed a bunch of ideas I've had for ages but I'm not sure if I've settled on one. Part of the issue is that while I have a bunch of ideas I want to write, I also need to make sure they have a good hook (as I've learned, sometimes the basics don't come together). Also, litrpg and progfantasy are really big on gimmicky series at the moment in order to stand out. I like time loop stuff, but kingdom building has a real dearth (mostly because it does horribly atm).
What I don't know is how I'll post it. I'll start a new pen name, but I may or may not share chapters here for feedback or just with certain beta readers. - I'm not leaving harem right away, because this is my job. My expectation is that my income will be dropping by around 40% this year if things don't pick up (and this after some less-than-stellar releases last year, like Spellblade 5), to give people an idea of why I'm unhappy. I need to plan ahead, especially as I'd only just hit a point I felt secure taking 3 months between releases (and now I'm not).
So, yeah, I said I'd take a break but I don't know how much of one I'll end up taking. I'm bad at them. I am still technically not doing that much work.

Or this is all that Amazon is recommending.

2023-04-14 23:27:29 +0000 UTCNo need for sample chapters for new series for me at least. But when it does release on day, hope you will share that!

2023-04-13 20:00:56 +0000 UTCI totally understand the hesitance over sharing a new pen name. But I will read anything you put out even if not harem.

2023-04-11 20:12:50 +0000 UTCI know nothing of how the industry works, but you write good books and I'll keep buying and reading them as they come out.

2023-04-11 16:45:48 +0000 UTCThe saddest part about this in my opinion is that apparently readers want that to an extend. They don't want well plotted and written books by an author, they want that quick snack that always tastes the same

2023-04-11 16:42:34 +0000 UTCKU is like half of my income, period. I'm nowhere near big enough to leave it. As for using Royal Road, it has challenges. You can't really test an idea without already writing like 50 chapters (as you need to have a fair few before most people will touch a story there and to maintain updates), at which point I have most of a book. I'd also burn goodwill just dumping some chapters and immediately pulling them for KU if it does well. Oh, and if people realise it's me (and I've been told over the years that people can pick my writing style), the story will absolutely get review bombed. To me, Royal Road feels like I either commit or just stick to writing books. The latter runs the risk of flopping harder but is lower stress (until it flops).

2023-04-11 02:50:51 +0000 UTCIt's difficult working out why Amazon isn't recommending your books, tbh. We have so little data to work with, and what we see are basically bread crumbs that hint at what Amazon is using to recommend books. A lot of authors focus on the lack of emails to followers, but that's common across YouTube, twitch etc. It's possible there's other weird behaviour, as Amazon's algorithm changes frequently. My conclusion for my books is mostly based around noticing trends in my sales, and how they've been different to a few other authors. The fact it lines up with my own fears from six months ago means it might be confirmation bias, but if the result is the same then I still need to change something up.

2023-04-11 02:42:55 +0000 UTCIt might be smart to put chapter of the progression fantasy series on Royal Road to test waters, before putting it on amazon.

2023-04-11 02:29:45 +0000 UTCI think shortening the books and selling them in multiple parts should definitely help, hopefully this works out for you and if you do a pen name you can always mix that pen name with this patreon much like other authors in the genre like kurtis eckhstein and David Burke

2023-04-11 02:18:12 +0000 UTCIt's pitiful. About 20-30 new haremlit books come out every month. 50% - 75% of those books come from "4" authors...

2023-04-11 02:15:48 +0000 UTCSounds like a ghostwriter factory. I hear there are several of them in the genre.

2023-04-11 02:00:38 +0000 UTCI wonder if selling on other platforms would help unless you are using KU

2023-04-11 01:37:54 +0000 UTCThere's an author that just released 3 books in a month...A MONTH. I don't know any genre that has authors chugging out books like this. I don't know how any legitimate writers will get recognized when their books are buried within a week. Correction: The author released 6 books in a month...

2023-04-11 01:00:07 +0000 UTCIt seems like a lot of people are complaining about Amazon not really advertising their stuff. I know atleast a few authors who are getting annoyed about it
