Break Time
Added 2023-03-28 02:00:01 +0000 UTCBefore anybody panics, Neural Wraith 3 is done and will release on Friday as planned. The final version has been uploaded to Amazon and I'll upload the final chapters to Patreon tomorrow.
This is more a heads up about what comes afterward.
When I delayed Neural Wraith 3, I needed to take a break. The book's done, so that time is now. But the delay has also been a kick in the ass to fix some other issues that have been lurking for a while and that I've kept ignoring while trying to keep up with releases every 3 months to avoid Amazon's algorithmic rage and people claiming I'm a dead author or whatever nonsensical BS gets bandied around.
If you don't want to read the whole post, here's the short version: I'm taking April off. There might be some news updates for patrons or ramblings about how I'm approaching writing, plus the Neural Wraith 3 commentary post for Messengers. Don't expect any chapters or stories. If anything else is posted, consider it a bonus.
Here's some more details and ramblings.
Why I Need the Break
Neural Wraith 3 ended up being the straw that broke my back, rather than the actual cause. The problems go back way further, all the way to Spellblade 5.
I intended to write Spellblade 5 and 6 together as a way to build momentum. Of course, I should know better than to try to speed up my writing by now, as I always get started, run into stuff that doesn't work, and instead of just ignoring it and throwing shit at the wall like is popular in self-publishing, I grind to a halt while trying to fix it. So Spellblade 5 became a massive book, with pretty hefty outline and plot modifications, and I didn't really have the will to write Book 6. Also, it sold kind of eh, either because it was Book 5 or because people really disliked the slow start (I won't have good data on that until Book 6 is out for a while, due to how I analyze readthrough).
That burnout threw me off. I took a break and a holiday, which I did need. Then wrote Neural Wraith 2, which did pretty well by itself, I enjoyed writing, and people loved. But other cracks started showing.
One big crack was awkward timing. March was supposed to be a break month, and NW2 coming out at the start of Jan left me no time to write a new book. I was worried about taking longer breaks between books, especially with the increasing volume of releases from certain authors I won't name (no, not the Big Four). That didn't work.
At the same time, that stress simply added to the general frustrations I was feeling. A big one is that I'm not terribly happy with the genre as a whole (not going into that). I'm also unhappy with my own writing. I try to improve, try new things, and explore interesting ideas. I rely a lot on gut feel with some sanity testing, but I'm very wary of just circling the drain and spitting out repetitive shit. That need to improve and do interesting things always comes up against the almost over-commercialization of harem, which sometimes feels like I'm hearing people talk about mobile games with how cynical and repetitive it is.
So yeah, I'm burned out and frustrated. Neural Wraith 3 was supposed to be an easy book and wasn't, as I ended up rewriting the middle portion multiple times. I also anticipate that a bunch of people will get upset over a few things. Hell, my gut feeling is that some folks will just flat out stop reading due to the Altnet sections.
April
Right now, I intend to just take April off. No attempts to do other stuff, unless I really feel like it. I'm not that much of a workaholic. I can work hard when necessary, but I've also worked my fair share of long, grueling hours with no time off over weekends (both as an author and before), so, like, yeah. The whole "rise and grind" mentality can stay with others. I've barely touched video games for a couple of months and have some cool indie titles I want to check out.
I won't promise any posts or updates other than the public April update and the Neural Wraith 3 commentary. The latter might take a couple of weeks, as I probably need to chill a little before touching anything related to the Altnet.
While I'm taking time off, I will be thinking about how to resolve problems, though. So you might see some rambling posts about that. Any posts like that I make that aren't content related will be at the $1 tier.
Resuming Writing (May)
I have some ideas for how I'll come back to writing, but will think them over and flesh them out. A couple of hard decisions need to be made. One of those involves Emperor, which has been in the "I'll finish it" pile forever despite my complete lack of time and its horrific sales.
The big one I need to resolve is a book backlog, though. So I'll mention my idea for it now, even though it might change.
My mistake when trying to write Spellblades 5 and 6 together was to release them close together. This was partly because I was worried about algorithm stuff.
But the idea of writing multiple books for the same series together is still a great idea. My series are all big, complex, have tons of characters and plot threads, and as such take a ton of time to catch up on when I shift between each series. If I write them back to back, I don't need to waste that time again.
In general, my writing process hasn't been sustainable. Anyone who has beta read for me knows that.
This isn't really anything special, but it will lead to a potentially extended gap between Neural Wraith 3 and Heretic Spellblade 6. It will also mean I need to revisit how Patreon works, as I'll be writing books well before they're published. My thoughts right now are to try to sit down in May through September and just write the rest of Spellblade, for instance (or as much as I can).
Anyway, let me know your thoughts, opinions etc, if you have any.
Comments
Thanks. I just wanted to say that I did take your comment on the earlier post into mind and decide not to pause Patreon payments, and instead let people choose to decrease their pledge with a warning that I'd be inactive for a month (possibly two, depending how long I take to get good chapters up for Spellblade). It helps a lot to let me take a break and focus on the books, instead of always trying to play catch-up.

2023-04-04 05:14:33 +0000 UTCHaving read NW3 in 2 days I am uncertain about why you were worried because of the three it has been the best IMO. It starts off with a bang and soars from there.

2023-04-03 21:53:37 +0000 UTCMy thoughts are as follows. 1. Your books are great. I know creatives sometimes get really in their head about why people say this or why their readers read them but I say this as someone that thinks even some of what I enjoy in the genre is bad writing, your books ARE GREAT. It is good writing. Feel good about that. 2. Do what you gotta do. I can't speak for the algorithmic stuff, but if it means 6 months between books, fine. You write long books relatively anyways. As long as it is financially something that works on your end, I support it. I found this genre relatively late. I am a huge trad reader. Two books a year should be seen as a godsend as opposed to some kind of negative. 3. As for Patreon, I gotta be honest, I pay this shit to get updates from you. I am not paying for early access to chapters. As evidenced by my tier. I don't like the web novel experience so not gonna read like that. So working on a backlog that means Patreon releases are not full time and instead are parceled out doesn't bother me at all. I will say it again. You write well. Not just for the genre, but in general. You create characters that I can invest in, which for me is the most important thing. You will get a shot from me no matter where you go with your plot or what kind of stories you write as your character writing has earned you that opportunity at least from me.

2023-04-01 20:01:15 +0000 UTCI literally just moved apartment yesterday (this morning is weird...) so don't worry about email for now. It's all learning experiences, and you can only become better at dealing with your issues, no?

2023-03-30 06:55:49 +0000 UTCHmm. I think I owe you an email. Anyway, that is a problem I'm aware of but it means I'll just need to manage my time. I'm not really free from Amazon's algorithm, especially as there's only been an increase in the amount of repetitive stuff pumped out.

2023-03-30 00:52:19 +0000 UTCJust want you to know that I have read all of your books and have enjoyed each one. They are separate from the rest of books in their respective genres and the stories are unique and incredibly interesting. Thanks for what you do and have great break!

2023-03-28 08:23:30 +0000 UTCPersonally just glad to hear you taking better care of yourself. Feeding the algorithms is fine and alll, but you need to be a functioning human being first and foremost. I imagine you've got this though, you're learning as you go after all. One tiny concern I do have, which I imagine you've had bouncing around your head for a long time by now anyhow, is that spending that long on writing a series, while undoubtedly good for saving time switching mental space between series and the quality, might also become a reason to get even more stuck in the repeat rewriting situation. More time also means more time to be perfectionistic, thinking of more new things and finding even more ways X or Y could be done better. Best of luck and frankly I'm just excited for your progress with finding a way to do this while staying sane.

2023-03-28 07:11:56 +0000 UTCDon't neglect your self care. I am looking forward to 3 when it drops and I'm perfectly happy to get books in whatever order you do them.

2023-03-28 06:29:41 +0000 UTCHang in there my dude. For myself, I'd rather a book a year from you than none at all. I'm a patron because I am grateful for your talent, not just for the chapters. :)

2023-03-28 06:15:41 +0000 UTCI want to come back to it after heretic as it's been so long, so we'll see how my writing plans go.

2023-03-28 04:07:22 +0000 UTCThat's one possibility. I think a large part of the book's poor performance is linked to a bad preorder and launch, so that could well be part of it. And you've reminded me that I need to finish listening to the HS5 audiobook as I got the MP3s while busy with neural Wraith 3.

2023-03-28 04:05:39 +0000 UTCI'll make a separate post about emperor once I've had time to think about it. But if I didn't continue it i would release some sort of spoiler dump from my notes.

2023-03-28 04:02:23 +0000 UTCYeah, ixion has a pretty rough difficulty curve. That level of micromanaging and overplanning is my jam, though. I did a big binge when it initially came out (and got slammed for its difficulty) but had to drop it to finish Neural Wraith 2 and haven't gotten back to it since.

2023-03-28 03:44:18 +0000 UTCOoh excellent options, I've used the Ixion ost as background music pretty often though I ended up rage quitting the game twice

2023-03-28 03:34:06 +0000 UTCLoved NW3 and will love to read your stuff regardless of genre. Enjoy your break. This is my personal thought so ignore it if it doesn’t make sense, so my opinion for spellblade 5 relatively low performance may also be due to the news we got that HS5 and 6 would be released back to back, so i and few others i know waited for HS6 to release and would read them together, as a result i have still not read 5 now waiting for audiobook of HS5 as its release date is close.

2023-03-28 03:29:39 +0000 UTCI sometimes wish it was possible for the people who actually care about their craft to have the confidence afforded only to people who are comfortable churning out the same crap constantly. Take the time you need, I would much prefer waiting until you are happy with the project to reading it earlier. That said, if you do decide not to move forward with Emperor (either for commercial reasons or you just can't find a conclusion to that story that you find satisfying) could you consider releasing the draft version to Messengers? Even just the outline of the conclusion would be interesting to see. Once again, I hope you are able to recouperate over your break and I hope that the release of NW3 goes well for you. I love your books, on revisiting it last week, I think DT3 might be my single favourite haremlit book and I would love to keep reading new books from you for years to come (whatever genre they are in).
Eric Arthur Blair
2023-03-28 02:59:25 +0000 UTCTake the time you need. I firmly believe that a trying to force writing often leads to a poorer outcome. Remember, you don’t really owe me anything. I view patreon as a way to support authors I appreciate, not as a way to get anything! Of course I always appreciate the chapters! :)

2023-03-28 02:51:37 +0000 UTCI picked up Depersonalization when it came out in December but haven't found the time to play it, so definitely want to give it a try given it's had a good reception. Otherwise I need to sink my teeth into Ixion and Against the Storm, which are both indie building/survival management games.

2023-03-28 02:41:55 +0000 UTCEnjoy your break, clear the head space and enjoy some indie games! Any highlights in your game backlog?

2023-03-28 02:16:50 +0000 UTCMate, take your time and relax. I know I'm just a random person here, but one thing I have to say is don't worry about anyone else's release schedule. You aren't them, your you and I at least read your books because I like them. There are more than a few authors in this genre that release books even slower than you do and I enjoy their stuff as well. Outside of this genre, there are more than a few novels that im lucky if one comes out every 6 months, let alone a year, still waiting on picking up girls in a dungeon 17 I think to even be written, so take all the time you need. But stop comparing yourself to others, nothing good comes from that.
