Self destruct

Bit of a dramatic title, but I've had a couple of exhausting days and I'm sitting in my new place full of boxes that I'm too exhausted to unbox, knowing that I need to finish a book. I wanted to give patrons a heads up, but didn't want to risk announcing this only for something to go wrong.

Short version: I'm delaying Neural Wraith 3 until March 31st. Amazon gives a single "get out of jail free card" when it comes to preorders to delay them up to 30 days and I plan to use mine to avoid absolutely imploding while publishing a shit book.

February has been a brutal month for me. I convinced myself I could do it all, and was reminded that I couldn't. Neural Wraith 3 was going well, until I basically lost all of my writing time to moving and other IRL stuff and everything kind of fell apart. Mistakes have been made, mostly by me, and I ended up with the month from hell.

There's a strong chance I still could publish a book. It just wouldn't be very good.

When I switched from Spellblade to Neural Wraith, I said the books were easier. This is true. What I left out is that so much of what helps shape these books takes place out of sight, by beta readers (one alpha reader in particular, who is a patron and knows who he is) whose feedback allows me to make changes to the pacing and mystery. I wasn't leaving myself any time for this part to happen, because I fucked up my time allocation everywhere else.

I won't be doing a postmortem here. I believe I've said before that I need to get ahead on my books, then never do. This time, I've finally hit the wall and while I can skate by once, I really do need to change things and not just pretend I will. So there'll be a break after Neural Wraith, including a pause on Patreon payments, while I use dust off some of my past life skills to unfuck things.

There may be some updates to current chapters as I use the extra time to review the story and what I'm trying to write, as I'm not confident in where I was going. So any feedback on that front is also welcome.

Don't pause Patreon payments. I don't expect to not have to pay because you have shit going on. I know it has developed into a content delivery platform but Patreon was envisioned as a way to support content creators making the content that we all love. For me at least, supporting you means making sure that you can make the healthy decision to take some time to unfuck your life. Otherwise, as a human, I worry for your health, and as a consumer, there will be no more content in the future!

While I understand you think Patreon is a service of give content receive money, there are many others who do not maintain a consistent schedule. I would recommend for your own finances to not pause Patreon payments. If the Patrons feel it's no longer worth supporting you they may cancel, but let that choice be theirs to make.

This was somewhat expected given the last set of chapters. I think the big issue is that Neural Wraith's core identity hasn't been solidified and expanded to the same extent as your other series, especially given the quests preceeding them. Spellblade, Demon's Throne, and Neural Wraith all have condense identities. "What does it mean to be a hero?", "What does will to power actually mean?", and "What are the results of technological growth?". But Neural Wraith's question hasn't been explored or plotted out to the same extent as the others. I hope the break will let you focus on the core concept of the series. At least for me, that is always the largest draw.

Thanks for the support, and I hope things improve on your end as well (the UK and the world being what it is, I suppose). I'll muddle through and the break will help, especially after I get this book out and have some time to think and plan properly.

Thanks. And yeah, I do feel extra time put into books (by any author) shows. I can churn out a book in a week or two, but a lot of my initial ideas aren't always very good. There needs to be time to stop and think, or to revise. I think writer teams can work faster, due to bouncing ideas off each other, but forced creativity (especially as one person) tends to be formulaic in my opinion. So I'll try not to fall into that trap.

Haha, will do

I can only imagine. The amount of junk I'd accumulated (and never really gotten rid of before) was staggering, and I can't imagine how much worse it would be over that length of time or in a bigger place. Thanks for the support

Thanks for all the support

I definitely should have known better given I've bumped into burnout before. Thanks for the support.

Thanks. I'll need to remind myself of the value of taking a solid break and settle into the new place (although I'll still finish neural Wraith 3).

Yeah, I should have known better given my own history of busy work periods derailing my writing. I seriously underestimated the stress of moving, especially on top of other things I've been trying to get done IRL (as I had more plans for March I've scrapped). Hopefully you're able to get back into your writing groove as well.

I had been writing my first book for about a month and figured I had another month or 6 weeks left when I got a job in Germany. That was November. I’m just now getting back into a position where I feel I can get back to it and I still have 6 weeks. I realized there was just too much other stuff involved in moving and the new job to even try. I felt forcing through the distractions would make it less, and I want the best start I can manage. I would recommend the same advice for anyone creating something, whether it’s the first or fiftieth. I you end up unhappy with it, that could corrupt all the ones that follow.

Make the time for yourself. Sometimes you really have to force that time to have a break, be yourself, process through an upheaval (like I dunno, moving). Mental health is no joke! You're a talented writer, with some terrifically cool visions you are bringing to life. Never stop being the human you are, and thanks for sharing some of yourself with the world through your series. Hope the new place is comfy and cozy. Get settled, the projects will be here. :)

To echo everyone else, take the time you need. Your books are a treat when they come out, and sometimes the anticipation of waiting a bit longer to indulge simply makes them all the sweeter. Burn out is an insidious thing, and I think we're all behind you taking whatever steps you need to combat it.

From what I’ve seen in this community, I’m sure everyone (Myself included) support your decision. We love the care and effort you put into the stories so if you need time to regroup then take all the time you need.

GooseQuack

Take your time.. we will wait. We downsized from a house we had been in for 35 years. That move was apocalyptic..👌❤️

Take some time off you dingus

Yeah what I love about your books is that they feel very well thought through and not rushed. So I prefer you take the time you need, but are also comfortable with. I can definitely say that I am liking series with a monthly or faster release schedule less and less. They don't feel organic. As I just finished going through Heretic Spellblade again, I can say the series is my favourite overall for books in general at the moment. DT and NW are a bit behind it, but still series I really like. Your books feels like proper books and not some short novela anyway 😊

GhostPhil

dude, take the time off & don't rush. moving places is massively stressful, in February i was going to move house myself to a smaller home but things in the uk are crap, so I'm staying right here and making do with what i can. your books are well worth the wait and when the day is a bad day i always look forward to reading to end of the day. dan simmons & Bernard cornwell, love their books and you, your books take me out of the world. mmmm not sure how to end this comment...... keep your chin up. 🥃
