September Patreon Update
Added 2022-09-08 14:00:11 +0000 UTCFigured I'd provide a news update given it will be a little while before I post a story or commentary (as I'm out of town this weekend).
Heretic Spellblade 5 is out. Hard to tell what the release will really be like, as I suspect the Labor Day weekend is messing with usual reading patterns (plus, the book is long). I'm pretty sure the cliffhanger is annoying people, but well, that's cliffhangers for you.
I don't really have proper news. Spellblade 5 burned me out, hard. I had ideas for the next few months, but between this book taking way longer than expected, Book 6 needing to shift a bit to accommodate some cut content, and general burnout, I need to be more realistic. That will probably involve a slower, more methodical schedule as it's been pointless trying to release faster (I mean, there are ways, but my books wouldn't be my books, to be blunt).
For Patreon content, there'll be the short story for Neural Wraith and the Spellblade 5 commentary Soon(TM). There's a good chance I'll fiddle with Neural Wraith 2 ideas while taking a break, as I have a lot of ideas that I haven't quite managed to glue together - but I'm close. As always, after I finish a book I end up thinking about writing something completely different, but we'll see if anything sticks (probably not). People complain a lot about dark content in fiction these days, so I've been thinking if I can even write something sugary or light (probably not).
Anyway, let's talk about the break and frustrations.
I won't go into much detail about my frustrations. A lot of these are the sort of things that bother me but that are better left unsaid, because they're not really beneficial. Kind of like bitching about work to a friend over drinks - you know that nothing can change, because it's endemic to the system, but you're venting for relief. I can't really do that here, because people will take it seriously.
If there's one thing I will say, I'm going to try to spend less time worrying about potential negative reader reactions to story elements. I wasted a lot of time spinning my wheels during Book 5 over that and ultimately stuck to my guns. Maybe some people will be mad. But I like the book for the most part, and I think I need to start owning my preferences. I'll still take on feedback, naturally, but this is more about bigger picture stuff.
With that said, I still need to take a break. Things became deeply unhealthy during Spellblade 5. I'm back to normal now, but given this was an evolution of writing has previous books, I need to revisit my unsustainable method of producing books. I'll see how I'm doing over the next few weeks as I take care of some IRL stuff.
To end on a brighter note, the 2-year anniversary of Heretic Spellblade 1 is coming up in mid-November. I consider this my true anniversary of becoming an author (as Emperor kinda flopped), so I might do something for it. A Q&A came to mind, but I dunno if anybody has many questions for me, ha. Let me know if you do.

Just finished it and I loved every moment of it. I’m so eager to find out what happens next. Be sure to take some rest as well! I am more than happy to wait for the sequels. You put a lot of heart into your books and it’s what makes them so fantastic.

2022-09-11 00:00:48 +0000 UTCI legitimately loved how the book came out. I know it’s a long road on these books, they are NOT short. Please don’t kill yourself trying to keep up with some of the more “pulp” authors that do generic books a quarter the length and half the thought put into them.

2022-09-10 21:26:26 +0000 UTCIf it means anything, I love the spell blade series, and you as an author. Before I found this Patreon, I’d check Amazon daily for a release. Keep doing you.

2022-09-09 09:18:24 +0000 UTCYou do you with that being said you're still one of my favorite authors and you can't rush quality. To be fair I still really enjoyed Emperor and hope you eventually touch it up and continue it as more than a trilogy.

2022-09-08 22:19:51 +0000 UTCTrust your instincts. You are the best in the genre for a reason and quickly becoming my favorite fantasy author period. I hope you get a nice refreshing break, putting 700+ pages together in the time frame you did, at the quality you accomplished would burn anyone out.

2022-09-08 17:44:27 +0000 UTCIt is your story to tell. You are the one who knows where the story goes and we can only guess. If people complain and say they could write it better, then tell them to write some examples for you. That way they can show they are not just being a troll. You could do plenty of spinoffs if you wanted to, and maybe use the material they mention(less work for you). I still remember finding a books as a kid where you made the decision and jumped to corresponding chapters based on what choice was made. With people who have powers that allow them to mess with alternative dimensions/realities, then literally any version of events could be found with them being the inflection point. Would love to read a story about the possible realities Charlotte jumped through to find her "perfect" Nathan.

2022-09-08 17:11:19 +0000 UTCThis book was one of your best, which is saying something since your in the 5th book of a series and there has been no drop-off of enjoyment or hype. Keep doing you. You're stories are amazingly intense, with intriguing characters and world-building that makes it easy to immerse oneself into. Hope you all the best my man, truly.

2022-09-08 15:52:24 +0000 UTCI'm glad you stuck to your guns. I liked the slow burn and a cliffhanger. I really enjoy the elements you use to give the world depth, with exploring magic/planar theory, and politics, etc. Please take the time to take care of yourself, and if you unwind with Neural Wraith, so much the better. :D

2022-09-08 14:51:18 +0000 UTCI’m about halfway thru 5.. loving it! Please take the time you need! Rather you be slower on release than you burnout and go become a short order cook! Neural Wraith was awesome too! Happy if there is more in that world! 👌👍👏❤️
