Tragically, by the time he reaches the top of the stairs, Anita has passed away and this marks a heartbreaking chapter in Garibaldi’s life as he loses his revolutionary partner amidst the chaos of war.

Abraham Lincoln offered Garibaldi command of the Union Army out of desperation as the Union was not in a great place general wise. So we can only wonder what if Garibaldi had gotten his way and the Union then assured immediate abolition? what would he have gone on to do as a Union officer?
