Hello, You Amazing Patreon Members!

Our next Extra History theme is Women in History!

Queens and revolutionaries, sinners and saints, artists and scientists—women have always been a part of the human story. However, until recently women's history was an under-studied and recognized field, and that still has impacts on the amount of attention paid to them in both academic and popular history. The only way to fix that is to set aside time to do it—so that's what we're doing! This vote will focus on Women's History topics, whether that be a biography of a prominent woman like Amelia Earhart or Dowager Empress Cixi, or a movement or event that prominently featured women such as the New York Garment Strikes or contentious history of birth control laws.

Want to hear about investigative journalist Nellie Bly, who intentionally got committed to the women's mental asylum at Blackwell's Island Prison in order to write an expose (she also set the world record for circumnavigating the globe)? What about the Civil War nurse Clara Barton who founded the American Red Cross?

And since our usual timeframe cutoff of 1940 might preclude us from covering some interesting figures, we're opening it up to 1950—which puts into play legendary WWII spies like Nancy Wake (the Allies' most decorated servicewoman), or resistance leaders like Sophie Scholl, a German university student who formed a group to resist the Nazis.

You can enter YOUR suggestions for the topic HERE in this form.

Susan B Anthony- her work was a major reason why women earn the right to vote in US. So I think she deserves to be discussed.

Harp Man

I really liked the Medici portrayal of her

The Rogue Chief

Women-at-Arms— a history of women serving in war-functions within western militaries… from the camp followers of the 18th century (performing necessary and unsung health & hygiene services, and sometimes taking up war fighting positions in dire straits, think Molly Pitcher)… to the medical contributors of the 19th century (Florence Nightingale, Clara Barton, Mary Seacole (see the video on her), and Dr Mary Walker, plus the women who disguised themselves as men to enlist)… to the uniformed womens services of the 20th century (the various code breakers, the WRENS of Britain, the WAVES, WACS, and WASPS of the US, and specific individuals like the first female US Marine Opah Mae Johnson, Golden Girls favorite Bea Arthur (also a Marine), and even the late Queen Elizabeth II herself)

The Rogue Chief

Enheduanna, the current leading claim to be the first author in history.

PhlubbaDubba

Princess Deokhye of Korea, the last Korean Princess

Nix

Sacajawea

Gretchen Sand

I suggest Caterina Sforza, the lioness. Especially sine the Assassin' creed and Borja series didn't really showed how incridble the she was.

Nimrod

Oh hey, it's been a long time since I had a chance to suggest this. Margeret I, queen of the north. United 3 rival kingdoms, lost a won but won the peace against the Hansiatic league, and in general just a fascinating ruler.

themunck

Wu Zetian, first and only female Sovern of China

Vivian Griffith

Woah! Apologies! Try the link again. It should be working.

Extra History

Hey EC, The link tells me that "The form June/July's Suggested Topic for Extra History! is no longer accepting responses." Is this correct? It's only 3rd July

Chee Auer

Perhaps the life and times of Eleanor Roosevelt. Arguably the greatest First Lady the nation ever had, a American hero in her own right with a career in humanitarianism and internationalism going far beyond the death of her husband.

The Hand Of Ray

I’m throwing in a suggestion for Hildegard von Bingen, the woman you mentioned in episode 2 of the history of beer. She was only talked about for roughly 24 seconds, but you made her sound so interesting; that woman did just about everything! Except being the first one to hop ale, but nobody’s perfect.
