Hero or Terrorist? - John Brown #1

John Brown was an American abolitionist leader who fought for the equality of all races. He helped countless slaves reach freedom in his lifelong pursuit of equality but his use of violence as a necessary tool is highly controversial, even to this day.

I'm not sure I'd be that strict, either. Trying to do the right thing and failing doesn't make your actions unjustified. If successfully advancing the cause were the standard, every failed rebellion, every unsuccessful defence of a homeland, and every doomed last stand would have to be considered unjustified. And yet, despite this, we often celebrate such valiant efforts. It's almost as though history isn't neatly split into good guys and bad guys.

Violent radicals on both sides will make the "silent majority" side with strong men who bring safety through oppression. That said, when slavery is a society-wide institution, making slavers terrified may be the only way to achieve change. I don't have the source handy, but I read that after Sparticus, Rome enacted a lot of slave welfare policies because the average Roman slave owner became so terrified of another revolt. Rome couldn't get rid of slaves because they were too entrenched, so some reform was the best follow-up to the revolt.

To be honest, violent radicals on both sides would make things worse, not better. The only political systems I can think of wherein violence is the norm would be the ancient Romans, or the Klingons. However, last time I checked, there are no Klingons in the U.S. political system. P.S: One of my forebears was stuck in an arsenal making cannon balls for the British Army to use to try and put down the American Revolution. What would that make me in your eyes?

I have been looking at modern political violence in the US and wondering if having violent radicals on both sides wouldn't balance things out. I suspect I'm about to find out it's not that simple.

In my experience, almost no one believes that violence is always wrong. People will SAY that violence is never a valid strategy but almost always have some historical cause where they support violence. If you support the American Revolution but not John Brown, you're saying that you think that the economic rights of rich white men were worth killing for, but that the rights of black people were not. This isn't to say I'm an unambigious John Brown fan. He was clearly a bit of a religious nut and I sometimes wonder if his actions actually contributed to the abolition of slavery. To me, that's the real question. If all those killings didn't make a real difference towards abolition, they weren't justified. I'm sure this series will explore that question!

Props for using the bible quote about the 2 she-bears. For those wondering 2Kings2:24 where God brutally murdered children for teasing a bald man. And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

Brief lamb update: we have now had 21 lambs born so far, so fingers crossed our ram is feeling very pleased with himself.

Or, to translate this into the language of cows [just in case ours have access to the internet]: Moo moo moo moo moo moo moo moo moo moo moo moo moo moo moo! Moo, moo moo!

Old John Brown lies mouldering in his grave But his soul is marching on! Glory, Glory Hallelujah!
