Frederick the Great Wrap-up with Extra History LIES

Welcome Extra Historians to Lies, where we talk about the mistakes we made and the details we couldn't quite squeeze into our Frederick the Great Series. With questions like, was Walpole really around during all of these wars? How did a 9-year war become called the 7-years war? And what is "negative enlightenment"?

Recommended Reading for this series:

Frederick the Great: A Military History by Dennis Showalter

Iron Kingdom: The Rise and Downfall of Prussia, 1600-1947 by Christopher Clark

Frederick the Great: King of Prussia by Tim Blanning

Osprey has three books just on Frederick’s army, plus many on particular battles.

I can't tell you how disconcerting it is that the top of your shirt log lines up with the bookshelves behind you....

AHAHAHAHAHA. Ok this made us laugh so hard.

I mean, statistically probably most of them. But if your boss is an absolute monarch and he wants to flirt with you, it is sometimes best to just play along.

If I might make a recommendation -- if you do want to do the Partitions of Poland as a series someday, you could absolutely do a one-off episode focusing on just the FIRST Partition. Seeing as that's the one involving Frederick and Maria Theresa, it works as a sequel to this series, and if you ever do get to doing a whole series on the Partitions, it'll let you get the the REALLY crazy stuff quicker.

Were there any STRAIGHT military officers in 18th century Prussia?

Brief lamb update: so far we have had 11 lambs born this year at one of the care farms I attend ~ the others are not due to start lambing until Spring. We've also got a puppy on reserve from something called HypoHounds, which is a charity who train dogs to detect if a person's blood sugar level has dropped, although personally my concern is how the cat will react to a strange dog in the house!
