Ireland now under martial law saw that the nationalists were tried with no legal counsel or defense. Putting many to death by firing squads over the next five days and leaving the people of Ireland confused, upset, and ready for change.

I wonder how long before the next Extra Credits series focusing on the First World War comes along. 1846 13th May In the Kingdom of Great Britain, Tensions between the United States and British Officials in Canada are high. The Provisional Established Three Years before by American Settlers using Champoeg as a Main Camp before going off to Form their Own Communities in the Oregon Region has been Growing. A Petition is sent by William Gilpin and John C. Frémont as the Dispute over the Northern Border of Maine Remains Unresolved. While it becomes Clear that the Government in London has no Desire for War, the United States and the Settlers in Oregon are far more Eager. To Protect the Settlers, the United States and the Champoeg Government many Forts in the Region. Thus, when some British Soldiers try to Forcefully Remove a Community of American Settlers from their Land along the River Fraser, Shots are Fired and the Oregon War has begun. 1847 18th March In the Spanish Empire, the Peace of Madrid is Signed after being Ratified by both the U.S. Congress and by the British Parliament thus bringing the Oregon War to an End. Under the Terms of the Treaty, the U.S. Border is Extended to the Red River and Annexes Vancouver Island, although Great Britain Retains Fishing Rights off the Coast North of Vancouver Island. The Border of Maine is Settled as the Saint John’s River going to the Longitude Midway between the American Claim up to 1798 and the American Claim after 1798. The Border will then continue South along the Longitude until it Reached the River Croix, and will then Follow the River Croix to the Coast. To Connect the Territory under the Jurisdiction of the Lake of The Woods, the Border is Extended West to the Red River. 1848 24th July In the Kingdom of Great Britain, with the Transportation of John Mitchel to Van Diemen's Land [OTL Tasmania], by a Packed Jury on the Purposefully ~ Created Treason Felony Act, Leadership of the Young Irelanders Falls to William Smith O'Brien. O'Brien Arrives in Kilkenny to Call upon the People to Confront “the Perils and Honours of a Righteous War.” The next Day, at a Meeting of the Confederates Clubs, Stephens is Called upon by his Friends to Appear on the Platform, where he makes his Maiden Speech: “Friends, you are Called upon by a Proclamation of the British Executive to Surrender whatever Arms you may have in your Possession and are Threatened with all the Pain and Penalties of the Law from Retaining them after Tomorrow’s Sunset. Now, my Deliberate Advice to you is this: Treasure your Arms as you would the Apples of your Eyes and Bury them, Safely, with the Hope of a Happy Resurrection.” 28th July In the Kingdom of Great Britain, while in Killenaule, Hearing that a Company of Dragoons is on its way to Arrest O'Brien, the Young Irelanders Throw up Two Barricades across the Main Street, which Stephens, Armed with a Rifle, Mans, along with 30 Men Armed, mostly, with Pitchforks and a Couple of Muskets. As the Dragoons Approach the Barricades, Stephens Levels his Rifle as John Blake Dillon Mounts the Barricade and Asks if they are there to Arrest O'Brien. The Commander of the Dragoons, a Captain Longmore, Answers that they have no Warrant for O'Brien, they are Lead through the Barricade and Allowed to go through the Town. 1906 26th April In the Kingdom of Great Britain, in Broad Daylight, a Ship Pulls up at the Dock in Howth, County Dublin, where it is Met by a Group of Irishmen and Women Equipped with Wheelbarrows and Carts. Among them is Constance Markievicz, the First Woman to be Elected to the Westminster Parliament. Under her Direction, and the other Leaders of the Group, the Ship starts to Unload its Cargo: 1,900 Lebel Rifles. Markievicz, and those Assisting her, are Irish Nationalists. With the Irish Unionist U.V.F. now Armed, Thanks to its Own Gun ~ Running Operation, the Nationalists are trying to keep up, but the News of Guns being taken away in Wheelbarrows Spreads quickly, and Police and Soldiers Mobilise to stop the Illegal drop offs. A Crowd Gathers Shouting, someone Throws a Punch, and a Brawl Ensues. Amid the Confusion, most of the Guns make it Ashore, Disappearing under Floorboards and into Attics to be Retrieved Later. The Irish Volunteers are now Armed. A Revolt is Simmering, and there is One Group Determined to make it Boil over: the Irish Republican Brotherhood, One of the Main Backers of the Irish Volunteers, though it doesn’t fully Control them, who have been Advocating for an Armed Uprising. 1933 12th October In the British Raj, an East Turkestani Delegation has Arrived Requesting that the Dominion of India Support their Independence War against the Xinjiang Clique. The British Raj could Provide them with Weapons and Gold on a Regular Basis as full Support, or just this once as Partial Support, or not Support them at all. After due Consideration, Governor-General Freeman-Thomas Decides to Grant them Partial Support for the Time being. 1936 1st July In the Republic of Canada, Dominion Day, Commemorating the Anniversary of the Passing of the British North America Act on 1st July 1867, where the Three Separate Colonies of British North America [Upper Canada, Lower Canada, Quebec, and New Brunswick] were United into a Single Dominion within the British Empire Called Canada, is Observed with Fireworks Displays, Military Parades, Family Barbecues and Concerts. 1937 4th October In the British Raj, Horrible News has Reached New Delhi from Uttarakhand! Late last Night, the Celebration of the Hindu Festival of Light, Diwali, Turned Violent as Hundreds on Hundreds of Indians used the Gatherings to Launch Spontaneous Protests against Nepal’s Occupation of Rightful Indian Land. A Nepali Police Commander Lost his Nerve and Ordered his Troops to Fire upon One of these Demonstrations, leaving 50 Civilians Dead. Tempers are Running High throughout the Lowlands, Reaching Revolutionary Heights in Dehradun. The British Raj should be Prepared for any Eventuality. After all, do they not Claim to Represent ALL Indians? 1961 8th March In the United Islamic Republic, Angry at what they Perceive as Increasing Syrian Domination of the United Islamic Republic, a Group of Lebanese Military Officers, Resentful of their Subordination to Syrians and Opposed to President Aflaq’s Socialist Policies, in Particular Land Reform, March into Beirut and Arrest the Head of the Syrian Army, General Ziad al-Hariri, and Place him under House Arrest. The Conspirators then Seize Control of the Radio Station, Army Headquarters, and Airport, Establish Military Patrols and Checkpoints. Just before his Arrest, General al-Hariri has Time to Order a Field Artillery Unit from its Base 40km away to Enter Beirut and Suppress the Revolt. While the Syrian Officers, Ignoring Lebanese Complaints, Dutifully Carry out the Order, en Route to Beirut, these Troops are Met by their Lebanese Commanding Officer, who Orders them all Back to Base and Arrests the Syrian Officers. Beirut Radio Broadcasts a Communiqué from the Supreme Arab Revolutionary Command of The Armed Forces [SARCAS] in which they Announce that “the Army has taken Steps to Remove Corruption and Tyranny and Restore the Legitimate Rights of the People.” Communiqué 2 is more Political, Threating to Dissolve the Union with Syria unless the Socialist Laws that had been Introduced in Lebanon are Repealed and Plans to Purge Lebanese Officers are also Criticised. 1962 In the United Islamic Republic, a Constitutional Congress is held to Draw up a Constitution for the United Islamic Republic. The Document Agreed upon Transforms the U.I.R from a Centralised State into a much Looser Federation rather than a Centralised State, and all Non ~ Ba'athist Political Parties are Legalised. The National Assembly is no longer Appointed but, rather, Elected to an Unlimited Five Year Term every Five Years, starting the same Year of the Signing of the Constitution. 100 Assemblymen are to be sent from each Member State of the U.I.R. All States are to be Renamed Governorates, Ruled by an Appointed Governor who can be Re ~ Elected at Times Decided by the Local Governorates. The President now Serves Three Five ~ Year Terms in a Presidential Election held every Five Years starting in 1965. The new Democratic Reforms are Wildly well Received, and Aflaq’s Popularity again Skyrockets. 1988 In the Byzantine Empire, a Hydroelectric Dam Blocking off the Dardanelles Strait is Completed. This now Provides most of the Power for the City of Constantinople. 1989 In the Sultanate of Oman, by this Time, only a Single Country on the Arabian Peninsula ~ Oman ~ is not also a Member of the United Islamic Republic. The Reason is that while the Ideology of Pan ~ Islamism Spread to some of these Countries, such as to Yemen and to Kuwait, in Oman it has never Really Caught on, as it is an Ibadi Islamic State and has no Desire to Unite with its Sunni Neighbours. 2012 9th August In the United Islamic Republic, by the Narrowest of Margins, the National Assembly of the U.I.R. in Baghdad Votes 1344 ~ 1056 in Favour of a Controversial Bill Legalising Same Sex Unions. The Legislation now Passes to the Office of President Saleh, who has already Announced his Intention to Veto.

2022-12-24 20:05:24 +0000 UTCJust to repeat myself, I think that Lies should go a bit more over the Civil War that followed, as I think it’s not well described in the episode.(IMHO the essence was between “willing to compromise” vs “nothing less than full republic will do” factions) And probably touch a bit about how full independence (including full republic) that was obtained years later, which covered in detail can go quite long (probably Eamon de Valera would make an interesting episode or even series), but at least naming it briefly
