One final lot for the beer series...I wasn't 100% satisfied with the contents of the individual segments which is why I left it so long. 1,800 BC In the United Sumerian States, a Poem Honouring the Goddess Ninkasi, Describing the Different Steps Ninkasi goes through to make Beer, and Providing Brewers with Instructions on how to make more ~ the World’s First Known Recipe for Beer. The Beer is made from Bread made using Twice ~ Baked Barley. 1,600 BC In the , by this Time, the Maya City-States are using Cacao Bean to Produce Beer, long before it is used to make the non ~ Alcoholic Cocoa. The Production Method is Unknown, however, Friar de Landa will Describe the Process of Preparing Beverages as Involving Grinding Maize and Cacao into a Paste before Adding Liquids or Spices. Agriculture is in the of Men in the Mayan World, however, Food Preparation Belongs to Women. 57 BC In the , in his Book Commentarii de Bello Gallica, Julius Caesar Notes that the Toughest and Wildest ~ the Germans and, in Particular the Belgians ~ both Refuse Rome’s Drink. “They do not at all Allow Wine to be Imported among them,” Caesar Writes, “since they Believe that, by it, Men are made soft and Effeminate for the Endurance of Hardship,” and Caesar Agrees, Thinking that Wine Drinking has Weakened the Gauls and Assisted in Rome’s “Civilized” Conquests. 33 AD In the Kingdom of Israel, Jewish Preacher and Religious Leader Yeshua is Crucified after being Accused of Blasphemy by the Sanhedrin. He will be Remembered by Future Historians as the Central Figure of Christianity, the Second largest Religion in the World. Most Christians will Believe he was the Incarnation of the Son of God and the Awaited “Messiah” Prophesised in the Bible. Christian Doctrine will Include the Belief that Yeshua was Conceived by the Holy Spirit, was Born of a Virgin Named Miriam, Performed Miracles, Founded the Christian Church, Died by Crucifixion as a Sacrifice to Achieve Atonement for Sin, Rose from the Dead, and Ascended into Heaven, from where he will Return. Commonly, will Believe that Yeshua Enables People to be Reconciled with God. The Creed will Assert that Yeshua will Judge both the Living and the Dead either before or after their Bodily Resurrection, an Event Tied to the Second Coming of Yeshua in Christian Eschatology. The Great Majority of Christians will Worship Yeshua as the Incarnation of God the Son, the Second of the Three Persons of the Trinity. The of Yeshua will be Celebrated Annually on 25th December as Christmas. His Crucifixion will be Honoured on Good Friday and his Resurrection on Easter Friday. The World’s most Widely used Calendar Era will be Based on the Approximate Birth of Yeshua. Yeshua will also be Revered in other Religions: in Islam, Yeshua [often Referred to by his Qurannic Name, Isa] will be Considered the Penultimate Prophet of God and the Messiah. Muslims will Believe that Yeshua was Born of a Virgin but was neither God nor a Son of God. The Quran will also State that Yeshua never Claimed to be Divine. Most Muslims will not Believe that he was Killed or Crucified, but that God had Raised him into Heaven while he was still Alive. In Egypt, Egyptian Christians will Identify Yeshua with both Osiris AND his Son, Horus. [the “Father and the Son” Portion of the OTL Christian Trinity] and Miriam with Isis, Effectively Elevating Osiris, Horus, and Isis to the Supreme Position in the Pantheon. In Contrast, Judaism will Reject the Belief that Yeshua was the Awaited Messiah, Arguing that he did not Fulfill any of the Messianic Prophesies and was neither Divine, nor Resurrected. For Buddhists, Yeshua was neither Divine nor the Son of God, but was a Reborn Follower of the Buddha who tried to Guide Humanity away from its Destructive ways and Hateful Traditions, and the Crucifixion will Simply be Considered a Sad Event Caused by Minds Confused by Anger and Dissatisfaction, not an Inevitable Path of Atonement for the Sins of 1807 2nd May In the Kingdom of Spain, the Citizens of Madrid begin to Gather outside the Royal Palace in an Attempt to Prevent the Removal of Prince Francisco de Paula of Spain, a Brother of King Ferdinand VII of Spain. She will be Remembered by Future Historians as a Legendary Heroine amongst the People of , having become Known in her Neighbourhood for her Youth and Charm. The Generally Accepted Version of her Death is that she Sheltered in the Embroidery Workshop where she Worked on the Orders of the Owner, although it is Possible, but not Certain she may have Fought in the Park of Artillery Monteleone, as it is Known other Women from her Neighbourhood did. She was in Possession of a Pair of Scissors, and the Soldiers, under the Authority of Martial Law, which was in Place at the Time, Accused her of Carrying a “Weapon” and Immediately Carried out a Summary Execution by Shooting her. Another Version will that Manuela came upon Roman Soldiers who tried to Grope and Molest her. Fearing Sexual Assault or worse, she Threatened them with a Pair of Scissors. They then Shot her. Yet another Version will State that Manuela, Working in the Defence of the Artillery Battery in Monteleón, Lead by Luis Daoíz y Torres and Pedro Velarde y Santillán, her Father, a French Baker Named Jean Malasgne, Purportedly Shot at the Roman Soldiers from the Window of his House and she Supplied him with Gunpowder and Ammunition until she Died when she was Struck by a Bullet. A very popular style today is the fruited sour, or similar. Often the brewer starts with a berlinerweiss recipe, tweaks things to get into the desired ABV range, tries to control the hop/malt flavors as necessary, then once the "raw" product's been made, throw in fruits, vegetables, and other adjuncts, then either continues with the same yeast or tosses in a different one, and lets it sit again. OMG. Great beers, like fruit slushies/smoothies sometimes, or like the tartest fruit-forward beers imaginable. They are definitely not Reinheitsgebot-approved. But the flavor profiles, noses, and mouthfeels can blow your mind. Definitely a strong style, IMHO %^)

It is quite reasonable to brew higher ABV beers. Just need to tweak the processes and yeasts used. All yeasts are not the same. And in fact, there are different strains that impart wildly different noses and tastes to the same raw ingredients, as one would imagine. As well as changing hop/malt profiles, to accentuate a panoply of noses and tastes. Vibes from garlicky to perfume-y to citrus-y, to biscuit-y, to fruit-y (and different kinds of fruit, it's all just esters), yada yada yada. The various chemical products of the fermentation can include a literal biochemistry-lab of concoctions: thiols, esters, butyls, you name it. (In the old days, that meant bad beer %^). Typical adjectives used with these beers include funky, dank, hop-forward, etc. It's incredible what one can do with the 4 basic ingredients.

Let me say a bit about the original IPAs. To summarize, they supplanted the standard ale brewed in England and shipped all over the place in great part due to being about to ship a higher ABV, stronger-flavored beverage, in the same barrels and taking up the same volume on the ship, and once at the destination being cut with water to reduce the ABV to a more traditional level. See Beer Advocate's writeup on that: www.beeradvocate.com/beer/styles/150/ It was a transportation issue as well as a way to make more money or provide more beer to troops, with the same amount of volume. Darned clever.

(Damn! My whole dissertation on beer got lost when I accidentally bumped the button on the mouse. Grumble grumble...) First, I grew up in LA, and started drinking different beers in my late teens, and definitely was into it in my 20s. Not to get wasted (well mostly %^), but to taste the differences. I really did not like the big 3 of the time (Coors, Miller, Bud), though Coors was the least sweet of the bunch and therefore the most palatable. I think I'd "gone off the continent" by 19 or so, trying beers like Xingu, Eku 28, Tsingtao/Qingdao, and so many others. Sadly, it was before the Internet and before there were apps that would allow me to rate, track, and follow beers I tried %^( Way back then, the "better" beers were all imports, for a solid hoppy dry ale, Heineken was the go-to, Newcastle was a fine brown, and Guinness was "the stout". How little we knew!

The only MacBeth trivia I know is that one of the actresses playing Lady MacBeth once decided she was going to perform the "out, out, damned spot" scene with her hands over her eyes, and while she was doing so she walked right off the stage and fell into the orchestra pit.
