Born in Rio de Janeiro, Pedro was the Seventh Child of Emperor Pedro I of Brazil and thus was a Member of the House of Braganza. His Father’s Abrupt Abdication and Departure for Europe left the 5 ~ Year ~ old as Emperor, and led to a Grim and Lonely Childhood and Adolescence, Obliged to spend most of his Time Studying in Preparation for Rule. His Experiences with Court Intrigues and Political Disputes during this Period later Greatly Affected his Character and he Grew into a Man with a Strong Sense of Duty and Devotion to his Country and his People, but Increasingly Resentful of his Role as a Monarch. Inheriting an Empire on the Verge of Disintegrating, Pedro II Turned Brazil into an Emerging Power on the International Arena. Brazil Grew to be Distinguished from its Hispanic Neighbours on Account of its Political Stability, Zealously Guarded Freedom of Speech, Respect for Civil Rights, and Form of Government ~ a Functioning Representational Monarchy. Brazil was also Victorious in the Paraguayan War, the Uruguayan War, and the Platine War, with Pedro Travelling to the Front himself, as well as Prevailing in Several International and Domestic Disputes. Pedro II Steadfastly Pushed through the Abolition of Slavery Despite Opposition from Powerful Political and Economic Interests. A Savant in his Own Right, the Emperor Gained a Reputation as a Vigorous Sponsor of Learning, Culture, and the Sciences, and he Won the Respect and Admiration of the likes of Charles Darwin, Victor Hugo, and Friedrich Nietzsche, and was a Friend of Richard Wagner, Louis Pasteur, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, among others. The First to be Affected is Austria-Hungary, whose Situation is made worse by its Own Domestic Policies. In the Latter Half of the 19th Century, a Reformist Party has taken Power in the Austro-Hungarian Imperial Council, which has Remained in Power for Several Decades now. This Party, Called the Social Democratic Party, has Followed Various “Socialistic” Policies [Income Redistribution by Means of Heavy Taxation of the Wealthy and Government Spending to Benefit the needy], which has, Unfortunately, Severely Weakened Austria-Hungary’s Economy. As a Measure to help Pay for their Extravagant Spending Programmes, the Social Democratic Governments have been Gradually Debasing the Austro-Hungarian Krone, Causing Inflation and a Loss of Consumer Confidence. The Collapse of the German Economy has also had a Great Impact. Germany was Austria-Hungary’s largest Trading Partner, and the Loss of that Trade due to the continuing Economic Chaos in Germany Following the Great Depression Plus the Imminent Threat that Germany might be Forced to Default on Debts to Austro-Hungarian Financial Institutions, has Created a State of Extreme Nervousness in Austro-Hungarian Financial Markets. The Final Straw comes when the Social Democrats Push yet another large Tax and Spending Programme through the Imperial Council, and Announce yet another Debasement of the Krone. Consumer Confidence Collapses, there is a Run on the Banks, and the Stock Markets Panic. The Federal State of Austria-Hungary is Plunged into a deep Economic Recession, and it will take quite some Time for a full Recovery to be made. 26th April In the Japanese Republic, the Government Sets up its Own Version of the World Wide Web, the Watatsumi, or Umi for Short, from the Japanese Word for ‘Sea.’ Umi is a Completely Free Network of Computers Operated by Hundreds of Thousands of Fiber Optic Cables Running through all their Japanese and Korean States with Plans to, Eventually, Integrate both Taiwan and the Philippines. 1936 7th January The Persian Empire becomes the First Muslim Country in the World to Outlaw the Wearing of Veils in Public. Up until the Islamic Revolution of 1979, Persia Celebrates 7th January as Woman’s Day to Mark this Event. 7th October In the Spanish State, the British Cruiser HMS Orion stops and Boards a Tramp Steamer in the Gulf of Cadiz, Several Miles South of the Port City of Huelva. The Captain of the Steamer is a Devout Carlist, and, Knowing that the Governor of Huelva is the Prominent Carlist Manuel Fal Conde, he Orders his Radio Operator to Request help from the Mainland. Conde, an Anglophobe, has been Calling for a Confrontation with the British ever since the Blockade had been Imposed, Feeling that if the Rebels Show a Willingness to Escalate the Issue, Britain will Back down. With this in Mind, Conde Promptly Telephones the Local Aerodrome and soon a Flight of Bréguet Bombers has been Scrambled to “Buzz” the Orion and, Hopefully, Intimidate it into Allowing the Steamer through. However, when the Bombers reach the Orion, instead of Overflying the Cruiser, they Launch an Attack Run that takes the Ship Completely by Surprise, Killing many Crew Members and Causing Severe Damage to the Ship. When Return Fire from the Orion Shoots down the Flight Leader, the Surviving Bombers Break off their Attack, Closely Followed by the Steamer which had Precipitated the Attack in the First Place. In all, 41 Members of the Orion’s Crew are Killed in the Attack and the Cruiser itself Suffers Serious Damage, although it Manages to Limp Back to Gibraltar. 1937 26th February In the Byzantine Empire, in a Cynical Bid to Attract more Followers to his Cause, Georgios Kosmidis has used his Movement’s Funds to Open a Relief Centre for Fellow Refugees from Greater Italy such as himself. It would be Laudable, if he were not using these Relief Centres as Recruitment Posts for his Movement. Prime Minister Demertzis finds himself in a Difficult Position: it is Obvious that Kosmidis Intends to continue Propping up these Centres to Recruit the Disefranchised Refugees of Italy, so does the Imperial Government Shut them down to Stem his Position or do they Preserve their Reputation and Allow these Centres to continue to Operate? Some might Argue that having the Impoverished Refugees Working in Fascist Relief Centres is Preferrable to them Suffering in the Slums. Prime Minister Demertzis Decides to Preserve his Government’s Reputation and Declare the Centres to be an Initiative Worth Supporting!

I find these videos oddly hopeful considering the times we're living in.

Nothing like a good Constitutional Crisis to brighten up your day; I imagine the Supreme Chicken was laughing [or, rather, clucking ~ it's a chicken!] its head off in the background?

Surprise twist? Pedro II is actually maxed out on learning and gets called the successor to Marcus Aurelius. Not bad for taking the throne at 5.
