Suggestion Survey is OPEN to 10/5

Our theme for September & October is Object History: The History of... Thing!

If you've seen our History of Coffee series, you know that the story of an item or commodity can actually be just as riveting and fascinating as that of a person. Coffee, what a great thing! But what about the other things?

What about commodities like rum, that shaped the Caribbean and naval culture, or chocolate, that went from a ritual substance of the Aztecs to high-end confections in faraway Switzerland? What about gunpowder, sugar, or even electricity—War of the Currents, anyone? Or a series on the history of board games, which were sometimes more about getting into heaven than having fun (you know why they have a spinner? because dice are for gambling!).

Some notes about suggestions:

Comments

It did history of maps

JdragonX Plays

Cloth, including the fiber used to make it. Spinning, weaving, nalbinding and other precursors to knitting, etc. Though I suppose the *whole* topic might be too broad for a single series.

Dannette Tucker

The toilet!... from latrines to outhouses to the modern flushers, and the surprising origin of the name “Crapper” (there’s a reason it’s capitalized...)

The Rogue Chief

Eating Utensils. Forks, Spoons, knives, chopsticks, etc

Stephen Gentry

Feminine Hygiene Products.

Clare McDermet

I submitted The History of Vodka.

Brian Rose

I suggest the history of the Atlantic slave trade

Nimrod

My initial thought was radium, but there's probably only enough there for a 1 or 2 parter (discovery, tragedy of the radium girls, uses today). Suggested history of the newspaper instead.

Mercury Rising

History of the Computer
