Suggestion Survey is Open through 8/15!

Sorry for the lack of Suggestion Box in July! Rob was on paternity leave but now he is back with the theme for the month!
Our theme for August is... THE AMERICAS (Minus the US)
The Americas are rich with fascinating stories, but often United States history overshadows them in popular culture. This time, we’re looking for stories of the Americas outside the United States. Want to hear about Cortez and the fall of the Aztec Empire? How about the French Intervention in Mexico, or a history of Filibustering, where outsiders tried to topple governments and seize power themselves? Or the Battle of Vimy Ridge, a landmark in Canadian self-conception? Or maybe the Paraguayan War, the bloodiest conflict ever fought between South American states? As long as it’s Americas, throw it in there.
Some notes about suggestions:
- If a suggestion we encounter only has enough research material/production scope for a one-off episode instead of a full series, we file it in a separate list to reference later when we are planning to schedule a one-off episode between series (this is true for every survey we do).
- Only one suggestion per person please! Multiple suggestions from the same person during any given survey period will be manually removed.
Darn it, I just looked at this, and though, "if it's about the Americas, why not Amerigo Vespucci?" But it's too late now...

If it wasn't so recent (1930-1961), my first choice would be the Trujillo dictatorship in the DR, especially the part about the Mirabel sisters ("Las Mariposas"). So I'll second the suggestion about the Brazilian monarchy.

During WW2 the govt worked with the press to deny sending information about where the Japanese trans-pacific balloon bombs landed so they couldn't refine their targeting. That's barely an episode, but not sending information back to the Germans via our actions after we cracked Enigma was an entire branch of British Intelligence... including things like the Operation Mincemeat.

The Acadian Explusion (also known as Le Grand Derangement, or the Great Upheaval), where the original French settlers of L’Acadie (now the Canadian province of Nova Scotia) were turned out of their homes by the British, and scattered across the Atlantic periphery in one of the earliest and worst cases of genocide in modern Western history (second perhaps only to the Native Americans... 50% would end up dying). The inspiration for the Longfellow poem “Evangeline” (and incidentally the story of how my own ancestors the Cajuns came to Louisiana)

Here's hoping there's enough information for the team to do a series on the Mound Builders, be it a single culture or all of them over the millennia.

I want to see Brazilian independence, they were the only South American monarchy and I want to see how it worked with Republic's and dictatorships from Bolivar, in the Bolivar series you mentioned Brazil as a monarchy and wanted nothing to do with Bolivar's republics. I want to see what they were doing in that time.
