Siege of Vienna - Tunnel War - #2

Vienna had received an offer from Kara Mustafa—surrender and live in peace as Muslims or Christians, or resist and condemn yourself to death and slavery. I agree it is easier to focus on strategy, but you have to know and understand how the strategy gets executed and that, unfortunately, takes blood and guts of people who almost never have an input on the "strategy". "War is Cruelty", to qoute William T. Sherman, and it is important to remember that the cruelty executed is what makes the "strategy" come to pass.

This is all so relevant now. If we don’t up the education ante like this old grudge holders will keep passing their bloated, forever expanding fictions down to younger protégés / people in their debt. Thank you James!! Thank you Extra Credits team!

I think I liked it more when war episodes focused on politics and strategy and the underlying causes of all events than on the details of who blew up what

Reminiscent of First World War stories about digging Tunnels under Enemy Trenches, sometimes with Rival Groups of Tunnelers meeting and strange Underground Battles being fought in the Pitch Black.

"As the days are passing by and as the dead are piling high No escape and no salvation Trenches to explosive halls are buried deep beneath the walls Plant the charges there and watch the city fear....Then the winged hussars arrived! Coming down the mountainside! Then the winged hussars arrived! Coming down they turned the tide!"
