We will be doing a series on The Irish Potato Famine: The Great Hunger in the first quarter of 2019. (But it looks like this was a very tight race with The Trail of Tears! We always keep an eye on our follow-up winners and there's a possibility they will be included in future polls!)
Majapahit: An Empire of Water --> Viking Expansion --> Dr. Sun Yat-sen --> The Irish Potato Famine
In 1845, Ireland is ripe for an agricultural apocalypse. A quarter of tenant farmers live on plots of land totaling less than five acres—so small that potatoes are the only high-yield crop able to feed a family. Then, the Blight comes. Potatoes come out of the ground black and rotted. Those who eat them become sick. As the hunger worsens, a century of discriminatory British Empire policies come home to roost. In the next four years, 100,000 Irish will starve to death, and a quarter of Ireland’s 8 million inhabitants will quit the homeland and move abroad. Those who stay dream of revolution.
why can't we have episodes on all of these??

I would hope for the same thing of the Halifax Explosion. Maybe you could do one for the 101st anniversary in December.

Anyway, sorry if you felt talked down. It was not my intention. As you wrote, my post was about what I think (i.e. let's respect the vote). Not about you as a person.

Funny how you assumed that "I won". I actually voted for the Halifax explosion which finished last. I was disapointed but I do respect other people's opinion.

The classic "Ha ha I won suck it" position. I'm not here to talk down anyone else's opinion, friend. You feel the need to do that, its reflection on you and your failings, not mine. Peace be with you.

Ha, the good old "You didn't vote for my pick, so my pick should be nominated without having to go through vote" position...

I'm really happy you guys are doing the potato famine. However, I am slightly torn because I know you guys would do a great job on the Trail of Tears. I'd definitely like to see you guys do it someday.

I hope you'll consider doing a one-off of the Trail of Tears someday, at least. Irish Potatoe Famine was my second choice, but part of me feels like Trail of Tears shouldn't be an option on a poll. It should just be done, for its own sake, like Hiawatha, Mary Seacole, and Urbino. I'll just have to hope...

also FWI, the IRA mentioned in this vid were the rebels who founded the Irish nation of today. This song is not advocating acts committed by the Provos of The Troubles: which is a topic I am not going to touch with a 29 1/2 foot pole.

The tensions of the Famine would ignite the many modern revolts in Ireland, with hostilities against the English still strong today. Here's an Irish War of Independence song, and the first lyrics are about a farmer still spiteful against his British oppressors, despite the Irish War of Independence being at least 70 years after the Famine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LKk9op-RAA

the Potato Famine was it's own American tragedy as well. Irish-American immigrates who lived in the USA to escape the Famine faced abuse, poverty and severe racism: especially by the KKK.

Will you be focusing exclusively on Ireland, or will you be looking at the larger "Hungry Forties" as well (that is, the Potato Famine didn't just hit Ireland)?

Trail of Tears definitely needs an episode. American schools barely talk about it, and I think it's out of shame and denial, the same way Japanese schools don't talk of Nanking or German schools downplaying the Holocaust. And I'm excited for Potato Famine too, because like the Great Plague it's a very personal story. Nearly every family with Irish blood has their own immigrant story, including my own, and that should be a family story brought to the spotlight.

Well since I am British, I have to admit, I've never known the exact specifics of the Potato Famine. I think one of the sad side effects of it is that even though the majority of Irish who left Ireland went to America to find a better life, they still ended up having to fight for their place in American society.

Do Trail of Tears after the potato famine because of its historical significance and how certain US states are trying to downplay its importance and rewrite history.
