The History of Non-Euclidian Geometry - A Most Terrible Possibility - Extra History - #4

What if the Fifth Postulate can't be proven at all? Bolyai and Lobachevsky introduced the case where our “parallels” could curve away from each other. And with that one small change, they unleashed a torrent of madness.

At least they didn't make the mistake of concluding that it was proved, and then be embarrassed by later generations of backtracking.

Twitch Presents classic Doctor Who marathon has pushed everything else aside, which is why I'm so behind on Patreon goodies. Sorry. This has been great, and has given me my first real understanding of non-Euclidian geometry. I guess professors don't bother to introduce the general population, outside math majors, to it.

Bill Lemmond

what took them so long to realize the 5th postulate cannot be proven??? in the axioms there really isn't anything that says a "line" is a line as we understand and not say a great circle on a sphere or that points cannot be lines and lines planes (projective geometry)

Hao Sun

Thank you very much for this series. Until this episode, I've never really gotten exactly what was so revolutionary about non-Euclidean geometry, why it was so important to develop, and what it must have been like grappling with these concepts when they were first developed. It's been fantastic.

_LOVE_ the illustrations of mathematicians' minds being befuddled! HA!

Paul Lenoue

Newton and Walpole... that would be an interesting alt-history novel.

"our son! Our most beautiful son! I shall name him.... Farkas."

Quinlan Vuong

F'thagan n' all that.

I would support a second Patreon page or up my support of this one if it helped get an ExtraMath page going.

Jonathan Morton

Are you guys going to explain Christofelle’s symbol and Riemann tensor? If you really could make it in an understandable and correctly, please for all the children out there make ExtraMath series.

Taum Wuthicharn

I was wondering if they were going to talk about projective geometry because that has some interesting ideas behind it, but the sphere is more intuitive

Stephen Phillips

I see what you did there with Great Cthulu :) Excellent job so far.

Tammy Spiller

I mean, he intersects with so many of the past series: He was in Parliament during the South Sea Bubble, he was head of the mint as gold replaced silver as the reserve currency, and now, here in NEG.

Julia Augusta

So, General Relativity next week?

Julia Augusta

I literally submit Newton for every "Submit a Topic" drawing.

Is anyone Else Thinking that Descartes and Newton Deserve a Series of their Own after last Week's Episode?
