The Empire of Mali - The Cracks Begin to Show - Extra History - #4
Added 2018-05-04 17:30:01 +0000 UTC
Mansa Musa, the most powerful king in Mali’s history, is dead. He leaves behind an empire that covers half a million square miles, and he leaves a son who will only rule for four years.
EDIT: I formally release you from the burden of having to write a comment that does correctly point out "7:45 says 1930s." Our scripts have this written down as the 1370s. :) --Belinda

It was a disease well-known in Mali at the time and well-attested in the Arab histories that we know about the Mali Empire from - the opening of trade routes spread it through the empire and it was always fatal. Mansa Djata II died from it in 1374. I honestly can't find *any* reference to the cause of Mansa Maghan's death - just the fact that he only ruled for 4 years. I'm curious to know where they found a link between him and sleeping sickness (or foul play as they imply), or if they got him and Mansa Djata II confused (he was another financially ruinous ruler after all).

Seems like it's about time for Mansa Musa to come and suggest a trade. Easily the strongest AI in Civ 4 with tech trading on and even without it, he's one of the top ones. Stupid, broken rich people.

Honestly that was purely coincidental but that would make an interesting tie-in for sure!

Did you set up the Discovery themed suggestions with this end in the hope you could do Portugal explorers? Because that would be interesting.

In general our main EH series are always six episodes long with a Lies episode. Occasionally, 5.

I noticed that too. It's a shame because it's probably too late to fix the audio.

You guys seem to imply that "sleeping sickness" was a euphemism for foul play, but just a heads up - that's a real thing. It's a disease endemic to Africa and is fatal within months if untreated (which would've been the case during this time.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_trypanosomiasis

I think he meant 1390s and just transposed it. That'd be about the right time for Gao

Quick thing: @7:45 you said "in the 1930's" Mali survived as an entity until the 20th century?
