Another discussion from this might involve an Extra History episode about the social experiment, in which an English noble ran a contest at a fair, trying to get people to guess the weight of his prize bull. He hoped to show they were all too ignorant, and thus should never be allowed to vote . Instead, he started research into the discovered wisdom of crowds. The connection with democracies and the Soviet Union is that democracies enlist the decision-making ability of a far larger group, potentially, maybe actually, leading to better decisions. Discuss. :)

2018-02-23 22:54:24 +0000 UTCI'd like to point out something that wasn't quite clear from that episode: Kennedy made live statement to american public on TV. Khruschev made private statement to Central Committee; soviet public was kept in the dark. It's a little detail, but it tells you who they were accountable to. Treating soviet people like they deserve to know nothing was a time-honored tradition in USSR that persisted through April, 1986 and August, 1991.
